Key takeaways
Outsourced research support means a managed team does the desk research your senior people would otherwise squeeze into evenings: prospect lists, competitor summaries, supplier comparisons and data gathering from public sources. Brief it with the question, the sources and the format, and check a sample. It gives fast, structured answers without senior hours spent searching.
- Covers prospect, competitor, supplier and market research.
- Brief the question, sources and output format.
- Public, official sources first; note every source.
- Personal data in prospect lists needs a lawful basis.

Chat on WhatsApp →What is research support?
Research support is structured desk research done to a brief: gathering, checking and summarising information from websites, public registers, official statistics and directories. It is different from commissioned market research with surveys and interviews. For a small business it often means prospect lists, competitor price checks or supplier comparisons.
What research can be handed over?
Hand over research that follows a clear method and uses accessible sources. Judgement about what the findings mean stays with you.
- Prospect lists by sector, size and location.
- Competitor offers, prices and positioning.
- Supplier comparisons on set criteria.
- Tender and grant opportunity monitoring.
- Data gathering from official statistics.
How do you brief it?
Brief research with the question you are trying to answer, the decision it will inform, the sources to use and avoid, the fields you want for each item, the format and the deadline. A sample of five rows checked before the full list saves wasted work.
What does it save in numbers?
In an illustrative case, a director spends about six hours building a list of 100 target firms with decision-maker roles and recent news. A research team does it in a similar time, but during the working day, and the director spends 30 minutes checking a sample and the summary. Example figures; the gain is the director's time, not the hours of work.

Chat on WhatsApp →What are the data protection rules?
Company information is generally fine to gather. Information about named people, such as decision-makers, is personal data under UK GDPR, so you need a lawful basis, usually legitimate interests, and must tell people how you got their details if you contact them. Marketing by email or text is also covered by PECR, which has its own consent rules.
When is research support not the answer?
It is not the answer when the research needs your industry judgement, such as interpreting a technical standard, or when the information is not publicly available. For customer insight, talking to customers directly is usually better than desk research.
What does this look like in practice?
A pattern we see: a firm's growth plan stalls because nobody has time to build the target list. Handing the list to a research team, with clear criteria and sources, gets it done in a week and lets the senior team start the conversations.
Research support checklist
Include these in every research brief.
- The question and the decision it informs.
- Sources to use and avoid.
- Fields and format for the output.
- A five-row sample check.
- Source noted for every item.
Next step
Tell us the research question you have not had time for. We will scope it with you and say how a research team would approach it.

Frequently asked questions
What is outsourced research support?
It is a managed team doing structured desk research to your brief: prospect lists, competitor summaries, supplier comparisons and data from public sources. It frees senior time and returns the findings in a consistent format for you to interpret.
Is it legal to build prospect lists of named people?
Information about named people is personal data under UK GDPR, so you need a lawful basis such as legitimate interests and must be transparent when you contact them. Email and text marketing also fall under PECR. Check ICO guidance before contacting people on a list.
How do you check outsourced research quality?
Ask for the source of every item, check a sample of five to ten rows against those sources, and agree acceptance criteria for completeness and accuracy before the full list is built.
