Key takeaways

Whether to push a call or contact form depends on how your buyers decide and how you can respond. Urgent and local buyers often prefer to call; considered buyers and people at work prefer a short form; email links are the weakest because they are hard to track and often fail on shared computers. Lead with one, offer the other as secondary.

  • Urgent buyers call; considered buyers fill short forms.
  • Lead with the route your team can answer fastest.
  • Email links are hard to track and often fail; prefer a form.
  • Offer the second route as a clear secondary option.

Should your homepage push calls or forms?

Push the route that matches how your buyers make decisions and how your team can respond. A boiler breakdown needs a call answered now; a kitchen refit or a legal matter suits a short form that a specialist answers properly. The wrong lead route either loses urgent buyers or floods you with calls you cannot answer.

How do phone, form and email compare?

Each route has strengths and costs.

  • Phone: fastest for urgent work, but only converts if someone answers. Track with call tracking.
  • Form: works any time and gathers details, but needs a fast reply and few fields.
  • Email link: easy to add, but opens an app that may not be set up and is hard to track.
  • WhatsApp: popular on mobile for quick questions; needs someone watching it.

A mailto link opens the visitor's email app, which on many work computers and phones is not set up, so the click does nothing useful. You also cannot easily see in analytics how many people tried. A short form with an email address shown as text is usually better.

What if you cannot answer the phone?

If you are on site or with clients all day, a phone-first homepage loses the calls you miss. Lead with a form or callback request, state when you return calls and use voicemail with a promise you keep. An answering service can also help if calls are the main route.

When should you offer every route equally?

Rarely. Equal routes split attention. The exception is a contact section at the bottom of the page, where listing phone, form, email and address together is helpful for visitors who have already decided to get in touch.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see with trades: the homepage leads with a long form, but the owner is up a ladder and replies the next evening, by which time the customer has booked someone else. Leading with a tappable number and a clear 'we call back within 2 hours' line usually fixes more than any design change.

Call or form checklist

  • Check how your last 20 customers first got in touch.
  • Check which route your team answers fastest.
  • Lead with one route in the hero.
  • Offer the other as a clear secondary option.
  • Replace email links with a short form.
  • Track phone taps and form submissions in GA4.

Next step

For one week, record how fast each contact route is answered. Lead your homepage with the fastest one your buyers also use.

Frequently asked questions

Is a phone number or contact form better on a website?

It depends on your buyers and your team. Urgent and local buyers often prefer to call, while considered buyers and people at work prefer a short form. Lead with the route your buyers use most and your team can answer fastest, and offer the other as secondary.

Should I use a mailto link on my website?

It is better to use a short contact form and show your email address as text. Mailto links open an email app that many visitors do not have set up, and they are hard to track in analytics.

What is the best way for customers to contact a small business?

The way they prefer and you can answer quickly. For many local services that is a phone call or WhatsApp; for professional services, a short form or booked call. Measure response times and conversions by route, then lead with the best one.
