Key takeaways

A weekly social media routine for a small business can fit into about three hours: a short planning slot, time to create and schedule two or three posts, daily 10-minute reply checks and a brief end-of-week review. A fixed routine is what turns good intentions into consistency.

  • About 3 hours a week covers one channel at 2 to 3 posts.
  • 10 minutes a day for replies beats one long session a week.
  • Plan on Monday, publish mid-week, review on Friday.
  • Put the routine in the diary like a client meeting.
  • Batch monthly to cut the weekly time further.

What does a weekly social media routine look like?

A weekly social media routine is a fixed set of social media tasks assigned to specific days and times. It covers planning, creating, publishing, replying and reviewing. The exact days matter less than keeping them the same each week.

What is a three-hour weekly routine?

  • Monday, 20 minutes: choose this week's posts from your series and content bank.
  • Monday to Tuesday, 90 minutes: create and schedule two or three posts.
  • Every working day, 10 minutes: reply to comments and messages.
  • Wednesday, 10 minutes: comment on five relevant accounts or posts.
  • Friday, 10 minutes: note which posts got replies, saves or enquiries.

How do you protect the routine?

Put each slot in the diary as a recurring appointment, name who owns it, and decide in advance what gets dropped in a bad week. In a bad week, drop the community commenting and one post, use the content bank if needed, but never drop replies.

How can batching make it faster?

If you batch a month of posts in one half-day session, the weekly creation slot disappears. The weekly routine then shrinks to replies, commenting and review, roughly one hour a week.

When does three hours not work?

Three hours covers one channel with photo or text posts. Video-led channels, multiple channels or high message volumes need more. If you cannot find three hours, move to minimum viable social media or consider outsourcing production while keeping replies in-house.

What does this look like in practice?

A UK independent estate agent followed the three-hour routine for Instagram and Facebook: Monday planning, Tuesday creation, daily replies and a Friday review. After two months it moved to monthly batching and the weekly time dropped to around 90 minutes. It did not miss a week in the following six months.

How does the routine change with team size?

  • Solo owner: batch monthly, replies twice daily, one weekly post minimum.
  • Two to five people: one owner for posting, a named backup for replies.
  • Six to twenty people: add employee posts or a second channel if the first is steady.
  • Multiple locations: central templates and a weekly minimum per location.

What does a bad-week version look like?

Decide your bad-week routine in advance: one post from the bank, replies checked once a day and nothing else. It takes about 30 minutes. Knowing the fallback removes the temptation to skip the week entirely, which is where consistency usually breaks.

Next step

Put the five routine slots in your diary for the next eight weeks. Treat them like client appointments.

Frequently asked questions

How much time should a business spend on social media each week?

About one to three hours a week for one channel with photo or text posts, and more for video or multiple channels. Batching monthly can reduce weekly time to around an hour, mostly for replies and review.

What should I do on social media every day?

Spend about 10 minutes checking and replying to comments and messages. Daily replies matter more than daily posting, because they show responsiveness and keep conversations alive.

What is the best day to plan social media?

Any fixed day works. Many businesses plan on Monday so the week's posts are decided early, or batch on the first working day of the month. What matters is keeping the same day.

How do I make time for social media as a business owner?

Put it in the diary as recurring appointments, batch monthly, use templates and recurring series, and keep a content bank for bad weeks. If you still cannot find the time, reduce to a minimum viable routine or delegate production.

Can I do all my social media in one session a week?

You can create and schedule a week's posts in one session, but replies need daily attention. A single weekly session plus 10 minutes a day for comments and messages is a realistic routine for most small businesses.
