Key takeaways

UK hours offshore support means an offshore team scheduled to work your UK trading hours, not its own. Teams in Sri Lanka and India cover a UK day on an afternoon-to-evening shift; teams in the Philippines cover it on a night shift. Evenings, weekends and 24/7 cover are added with staggered shifts.

  • Sri Lanka and India: UK 9:00–17:30 is 13:30–22:00 locally in summer, 14:30–23:00 in winter.
  • Philippines: UK 9:00–17:30 is 16:00–00:30 locally in summer, 17:00–01:30 in winter.
  • Neither Sri Lanka, India nor the Philippines changes its clocks, so the gap shifts twice a year.
  • Extended and weekend cover use staggered shifts and usually cost more.
  • Agree cover in UK time in the contract, including bank holidays.

How does UK-hours offshore support work?

UK-hours offshore support works by scheduling an offshore business process outsourcing (BPO) team to your trading hours, with shift start and end times set in UK time. The team works whatever local hours that requires, and the provider handles rotas, breaks and cover.

For customers, nothing changes except that calls, emails and chats are answered promptly throughout the day. For you, the question is simply which hours you need covered and at what service level.

What local hours do offshore teams work?

Sri Lanka and India are at UTC+5:30 and the Philippines at UTC+8, and none of them observes daylight saving. The UK moves between GMT (UTC+0) and BST (UTC+1), so the gap changes when UK clocks change in March and October.

  • UK 8:00–18:00 in summer (BST): 12:30–22:30 in Sri Lanka and India; 15:00–01:00 in the Philippines.
  • UK 8:00–18:00 in winter (GMT): 13:30–23:30 in Sri Lanka and India; 16:00–02:00 in the Philippines.
  • UK Saturday 9:00–13:00 in summer: 13:30–17:30 in Sri Lanka and India.

Why does the shift pattern matter?

The shift pattern affects who applies, how long they stay and how alert they are. Afternoon-to-evening shifts, as in Sri Lanka and India for UK hours, are easier to staff and sustain than night shifts. Night shifts are standard in the Philippines' BPO industry, but carry more wellbeing and retention challenges.

Ask any provider how it supports staff on late shifts: transport home, meal breaks and rota fairness all affect retention, which affects your service.

How do you cover evenings, weekends and 24/7?

Extended cover uses staggered shifts: an early shift and a late shift overlapping at the busiest time. Weekend cover adds a rota. Full 24/7 cover usually combines two or more locations, or a team working three shifts. Start with the hours your customers actually contact you, which your phone and helpdesk data will show.

Many SMEs do not need 24/7 people. A common pattern is people during trading hours and early evening, with automated responses and message capture overnight.

What does UK-hours offshore cover cost?

As indicative market ranges, managed offshore teams cost around £9–£18 per hour for standard trading-hours cover. Evenings, weekends, bank holidays and night shifts usually carry a premium. Covering 50 hours a week, such as 8:00 to 18:00 weekdays, needs more than one full-time person once breaks, holidays and sickness are included.

In the UK, the same 50 hours would need about 1.4 full-time employees plus cover. At the April 2026 National Living Wage, each costs about £28,309 a year in direct costs after employer National Insurance and pension.

What about UK bank holidays?

UK bank holidays are not holidays in Sri Lanka, India or the Philippines, and local public holidays differ from the UK's. Agree in the contract which days are covered, how local holidays are staffed, and whether UK bank holidays carry a premium. A good provider plans cover for its own public holidays so your service does not dip.

When is UK-hours offshore cover not the right fit?

It is not the right fit when the work requires someone physically in the UK, or when very short, unpredictable bursts of cover are needed that cannot be scheduled. It may also be wrong for a few hours a week, where a UK part-timer or an overflow service is simpler.

What does this look like in practice?

Global Bridge Labs (GBL) schedules teams to UK business hours by default from our Colombo hub, with extended or 24/7 cover available. Because Sri Lanka is 4.5 to 5.5 hours ahead, UK hours become an afternoon-to-evening shift locally rather than a night shift.

Checklist: plan your hours of cover

Work through these before asking for quotes.

  • Pull contact volumes by hour and day for the last month.
  • Decide core hours, extended hours and weekend hours.
  • Convert them into local time for each destination.
  • Decide what happens outside staffed hours.
  • Agree bank holiday and local holiday cover.
  • Write the hours in UK time into the contract.

Frequently asked questions

Can an offshore team work UK hours?

Yes. Offshore teams are routinely scheduled to UK trading hours. In Sri Lanka and India that means an afternoon-to-evening shift; in the Philippines it means a night shift. Providers manage rotas, breaks and cover so your hours are staffed consistently.

What is the time difference between the UK and India?

India is at UTC+5:30, the same as Sri Lanka, and does not use daylight saving. It is 4.5 hours ahead of the UK during British Summer Time and 5.5 hours ahead during Greenwich Mean Time.

Does offshore 24/7 support cost more?

Usually, yes. Evening, night, weekend and bank holiday shifts typically carry a premium, and 24/7 cover needs several people per seat once breaks, holidays and sickness are counted. Many SMEs staff trading hours and use automated message capture overnight instead.

What happens on UK bank holidays?

It depends on your contract. UK bank holidays are normal working days offshore, so cover is easy to arrange, sometimes at a premium. Also check how the provider covers its own local public holidays so your service does not dip on those days.
