Key takeaways

Visitors leave most often at the point where the site stops answering their next question. GA4 path and funnel explorations show the pages where journeys end. The pages that matter are the ones between arrival and enquiry: service pages, pricing and the contact page. Exits elsewhere are often normal.

  • Use GA4 funnel exploration: landing page, service page, contact, enquiry.
  • Focus on exits between service pages and the contact page.
  • Exits after an enquiry or a phone tap are success, not failure.
  • A funnel that leaks at every step suggests a structural problem.

How do you find where visitors leave?

Build a funnel exploration in GA4 with the steps a buyer should take: landing page, service page, contact page and enquiry. GA4 shows how many visitors complete each step and where they abandon. Path exploration shows the most common routes and endpoints.

Which exits matter?

Exits matter when they happen before the visitor has what they came for. A visitor who taps your phone number and leaves has succeeded. One who leaves from a service page after 15 seconds probably has not.

  • Service page exits with short engagement: the page did not answer the question.
  • Pricing page exits: the price surprised them, or the next step was unclear.
  • Contact page exits without a key event: the form or options put them off.
  • Homepage exits: the first screen did not show relevance.

How do you work out why they leave?

Combine the numbers with observation. Watch session recordings for the leaking pages, ask five recent customers what nearly stopped them enquiring, and read the questions people ask on the phone. The reason is usually a missing answer: price, timescale, area covered or proof.

When do drop-off points point to a redesign?

When the funnel leaks at every step and the cause is structural: visitors cannot find service pages from the homepage, service pages do not link to a contact route, or the navigation hides what buyers need. Fixing single pages will not solve a journey that is broken by design.

What limits should you keep in mind?

Low traffic makes funnel numbers noisy. With a few hundred visits a month, look at three months of data and treat the result as a pointer rather than proof. Consent choices also mean GA4 does not see every visit, so compare trends rather than absolute counts.

What is a typical small business enquiry funnel?

Most small business funnels have four steps: a landing page, a service or product page, a contact or booking page, and the enquiry itself. Many visitors skip steps, for example tapping a phone number on the landing page, which is why calls and WhatsApp taps must be tracked as key events.

Draw your own funnel on paper first, from the routes buyers actually take, then build it in GA4. If the report shows that most enquiries skip the contact page altogether, that tells you where contact options need to be, and which page to improve first.

  • Step 1: landing page from search, ads or social.
  • Step 2: service or product page.
  • Step 3: contact or booking page.
  • Step 4: enquiry by form, call or WhatsApp.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern in UK logistics firms: most visitors land on service pages from search, but the only contact route is a menu item, and the funnel shows the majority of visitors leave service pages without reaching the contact page. Adding a quote form and phone number to each service page shortens the journey without a redesign.

Drop-off checklist

Use these steps to find and fix your leaks.

  • Track enquiries, calls and WhatsApp taps as key events.
  • Build a GA4 funnel from landing page to enquiry.
  • Identify the step with the largest drop.
  • Watch recordings or run user tests on that step.
  • Add the missing answer or contact route.
  • Remeasure over 6 to 8 weeks.

Frequently asked questions

How do I see which pages visitors leave from?

In GA4, use Explore to build a path exploration or a funnel exploration, or add an exits metric to a pages report. Funnel exploration is the most useful for small businesses because it shows how many visitors move from landing page to service page to enquiry.

What is a normal exit rate?

Every visit ends somewhere, so exits are normal. What matters is where. Exits after an enquiry are success. High exits from service or pricing pages before any enquiry suggest those pages are not answering the visitor's next question. Compare exits with engagement time on the same page.

Why do visitors leave my website without contacting me?

Usually because a key answer is missing, such as price, timescale, area covered or proof of similar work, or because the contact route is hard to find or use on mobile. Session recordings and conversations with recent customers help pinpoint which.

How do I stop visitors leaving my website?

Answer the next question on each key page, add proof near calls to action, and put a clear contact route on every service page. Shorten the form and make phone and WhatsApp links tappable. Then measure the funnel again to confirm the leak has closed.
