Key takeaways

FAQ posts on social media answer one real customer question per post. They are the most dependable content a small business can make, because the questions come from buyers, never run out and match what people search for. Answer in three lines: the direct answer, the reason, and what to do next.

  • 1 question per post, in the customer's exact words.
  • 3 lines: the answer, the reason and the next step.
  • 20 questions give most businesses months of content.
  • Questions asked just before buying bring the best enquiries.

What is an FAQ post?

An FAQ post is a social media post that takes one frequently asked question (FAQ) from customers and answers it clearly. The question is the hook. The answer is the content. It can be a caption, a carousel or a short video of someone answering on camera.

Where do you find the questions?

Find them where customers already ask: enquiry messages, quote visits, phone calls, comments and reviews. Ask everyone who deals with customers to note each question for a fortnight. Most businesses collect 20 to 40, with about ten that come up constantly.

  • Messages and enquiry forms.
  • Questions during quotes and site visits.
  • Comments under posts.
  • Search queries that reach your website.

How should you answer?

Answer in three lines. First the direct answer, even if it is 'it depends on two things'. Then the reason or the factors. Then what the reader should do next. Do not hold the answer back to force a message. A straight answer earns more trust, and more enquiries, than a teaser.

  • Question: 'Do I need planning permission for a garden room?'
  • Answer: 'Usually not, if it meets size and height limits.'
  • Reason: 'Height, position and use decide it.'
  • Next step: 'Send us your plot details and we will check.'

Which questions attract buyers?

Questions asked close to a purchase attract buyers: how much, how long, what is included, how to choose, what can go wrong. Questions about doing the job yourself attract people who will not hire you. Answer both kinds occasionally, and favour the first.

FAQ posts help search because people type questions into social platforms and search engines. A post whose first line is the question, with a clear answer beneath, matches that behaviour. Put the same question and answer on your website so the work counts twice.

When should you not answer in public?

Do not answer in public when the reply depends on the individual's circumstances and a general answer could mislead, as with legal, financial or medical questions. Give the general principle, say clearly that it varies, and invite a private conversation. Regulated firms should check their own rules.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see with UK small businesses that keep a question log: content planning stops being a struggle within a month, and staff start pointing customers to posts instead of typing the same answer again.

FAQ post checklist

Check each one.

  • The question came from a real customer.
  • It is worded as they asked it.
  • The direct answer comes first.
  • The answer is accurate and up to date.
  • There is one next step.
  • The same answer is on your website.

Next step

Start a shared note today titled 'Questions customers ask' and add to it for two weeks. Post the first answer on Monday.

Frequently asked questions

What are FAQ posts on social media?

They are posts that each answer one question customers frequently ask. The question forms the opening line and the answer follows in a few clear sentences, as text, a carousel or a short video. They work because the topics come from buyers, not from guesswork.

How do I find questions to answer?

Collect them from enquiries, calls, quote visits, comments and reviews. Ask everyone who speaks to customers to note each question for two weeks. Most businesses gather 20 or more, which is several months of content. Record each question in the customer's own words, as that wording makes the best opening line.

Should I give the full answer or ask people to message me?

Give the full general answer. Holding it back frustrates readers and looks evasive. Then invite a message for anything that depends on their specific situation, which is where a real enquiry begins. A clear public answer also saves you repeating it in every private conversation.

Can I reuse the same FAQ post?

Yes. Repeat your ten most common questions every few months, updating figures and examples. Most followers will not have seen the first version, and the questions do not stop being asked. Change the example or the format each time, so regular followers still find it fresh.
