Key takeaways

An X ads budget makes sense for a narrow set of small businesses: those whose buyers follow news, sport, finance, technology or live events on X. A two- to three-week test at £10–£20 a day, about £150–£400, is enough to judge. For most local and consumer businesses, other platforms reach buyers more cheaply.

  • X suits news, sport, tech, finance and live-event audiences.
  • £10–£20 a day for 2–3 weeks is a sensible test.
  • Keyword and follower-lookalike targeting work best.
  • Most local businesses get better value on Meta.

Who is still worth reaching on X?

Journalists, investors, technology buyers, sports fans and people following live events still use X heavily. If your buyers talk about your topic there, keyword targeting can reach them in the moment. If they do not, no budget will make X a strong channel for you.

What does a small test cost?

X has no high fixed minimum for most campaigns. Illustrative test: one campaign targeting three keyword sets, £15 a day for 14 days, about £210. Track clicks to your site and enquiries. Engagement on X can be high while site visits stay low, so measure the action you need.

When is X worth a bigger budget?

Around live moments your buyers follow: a trade show, a sporting event, a product announcement or a news topic in your field. Short bursts timed to those moments can reach people while attention is high. Outside them, keep X spend small or zero.

What are the risks?

Brand safety, meaning ads appearing next to content you would not choose, and low click-through to websites. Use the platform's brand safety settings, review where ads appear, and judge results on site visits and enquiries rather than likes.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see: a local consumer business runs X ads because it has a long-standing account, and gets engagement but no bookings. Moving that budget to Facebook and Instagram, where its buyers are, usually brings the first measurable results.

X budget checklist

  • Check that buyers discuss your topic on X.
  • Plan £150–£400 for a short test.
  • Use keyword and event-based targeting.
  • Set brand safety controls before launching.
  • Judge on site visits and enquiries.

Next step

Search X for the phrases your buyers use about your service. If recent conversations are active, a short test is worth running; if not, spend elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

How much do X ads cost?

You set your own daily or total budget, and most campaigns have no high minimum. Small businesses often test with £10–£20 a day for two to three weeks. The cost per click or result depends on targeting, competition and how relevant your ad is.

Is advertising on X worth it for small businesses?

For a few, yes: those selling to audiences active on X, such as technology, finance, sport and events. For most local and consumer businesses, Facebook, Instagram and Google reach buyers more cheaply. Test briefly before committing budget. Measure site visits and enquiries rather than engagement alone.

Can I target competitors' followers on X?

X has offered targeting based on accounts similar to chosen handles, which can reach people interested in a competitor or topic. Options change, so check Ads Manager. Keep ad wording about your own strengths, and avoid misleading comparisons. Check results weekly and stop targeting that brings clicks without enquiries.
