Key takeaways

Law firm websites must meet the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) transparency rules, which require price and service information for certain areas of law and the SRA digital badge. Beyond compliance, clients trust firms that name their solicitors, explain processes in plain English and show relevant experience. Compliance is the floor; clarity builds credibility.

  • SRA rules require price information for certain services, such as conveyancing.
  • The SRA digital badge must be displayed on the firm's website.
  • Complaints procedures and Legal Ombudsman details must be published.
  • Named solicitors and plain-English processes build trust beyond compliance.

What do the SRA transparency rules require?

The SRA Transparency Rules require regulated firms to publish price and service information for specified services, including residential conveyancing, probate, motoring offences, employment tribunal claims, debt recovery, immigration (excluding asylum) and some licensing applications. Firms must also publish their complaints procedure and display the SRA digital badge, which links to the SRA's confirmation of regulation.

How does compliance affect credibility?

Compliance shows a firm is regulated and open, and the digital badge lets clients verify it in one click. Missing price information or badge can look evasive, and clients increasingly know to check the SRA register. A clear, findable pricing page is also one of the most visited pages on many firms' sites.

What else builds trust on a law firm's site?

Clients want to know who will handle their matter and how.

  • Named solicitors with photos, specialisms and admission dates.
  • Step-by-step explanations of common processes.
  • Typical timescales and what affects them.
  • Reviews from independent platforms.
  • Plain English instead of legal jargon.

What costs a law firm's site credibility?

Outdated legal information, unnamed teams, vague 'competitive fees' without figures where rules require them, and superlative claims such as 'best solicitors in the region'. Marketing claims must also meet the CAP Code. Review legal content whenever the law changes, and date it.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see: a firm publishes conveyancing prices in a PDF linked from the footer. Clients cannot find them and call to ask. Moving the price information onto a clear page linked from the conveyancing service page, with the badge visible, meets the rules and answers the question before the call.

Solicitor website checklist

  • Publish required price and service information.
  • Display the SRA digital badge.
  • Publish the complaints procedure.
  • Name solicitors with specialisms.
  • Explain processes and timescales in plain English.
  • Date and review legal content.

Next step

Check your SRA badge is visible and working, and that price information is one click from each relevant service page.

Frequently asked questions

Do solicitors have to show prices on their website?

Firms regulated by the SRA must publish price and service information for specified services, such as residential conveyancing, probate and employment tribunal claims. Other areas are not required, though many firms provide guidance anyway.

What is the SRA digital badge?

It is a badge that SRA-regulated firms must display on their website. It links to SRA-hosted information confirming the firm is regulated and explaining the protections that brings, so clients can verify it easily.

How do clients check a solicitor is genuine?

They can use the SRA's online register to check a solicitor's or firm's details, and click the firm's digital badge. Firms should make both easy by displaying the badge and naming their solicitors.
