Key takeaways

Social media lead quality is the share of enquiries from social media that fit what you sell. Measure it with a fit rate: good-fit enquiries divided by all enquiries. Log four facts for each enquiry, review weekly, and use the reasons for poor fit to change your content.

  • Fit rate = good-fit enquiries ÷ all social enquiries.
  • 4 facts per enquiry: source, need, fit and outcome.
  • 5 minutes a week keeps the log current.
  • Reasons for poor fit tell you what content to change.

What is lead quality?

Lead quality is how closely an enquiry matches the customers you want: the right need, area, budget and timing. A high-quality lead is one you would happily quote for. Ten good-fit enquiries are worth more than fifty you must politely decline.

How do you calculate a fit rate?

Divide the number of good-fit enquiries by the total number of enquiries from social media in the period, and express it as a percentage. If 30 enquiries arrived and 12 were a fit, the fit rate is 40%. Track it monthly. The trend matters more than any single figure.

  • Count all social media enquiries in the month.
  • Count those that fit your criteria.
  • Divide fit by total.
  • Compare with the previous three months.

What should you record for each enquiry?

Record four facts: where it came from, what the person wanted, whether it was a fit and why not if it was not, and what happened. A shared spreadsheet is enough. The 'why not' column is the valuable one, because it points at the content to fix.

  • Source: platform, and the post if mentioned.
  • Need: what they asked for.
  • Fit: yes or no, with the reason.
  • Outcome: quoted, won, lost or declined.

What is a healthy fit rate?

There is no universal benchmark, because it depends on how broad your offer is. As a rough working rule, if fewer than a third of social media enquiries fit, the content is aimed too widely. Set your own baseline over three months and aim to raise it each quarter.

How do you use the reasons for poor fit?

Group the reasons and act on the largest group. If most poor fits are outside your area, state the area in your bio and posts. If most are below your minimum, add a starting price. If most want a service you do not offer, your content is describing you wrongly.

What are the limits of measuring lead quality?

The limits are small numbers and hidden sources. With ten enquiries a month, one either way moves the rate a lot, so read it over a quarter. Many enquiries also arrive by phone or message with no visible source. Ask every enquirer how they found you.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see with UK small businesses that start a lead log: within six weeks one reason for poor fit clearly dominates, and it is usually something a single line in the bio would have prevented.

Lead quality checklist

Set this up this week.

  • Your fit criteria are written down.
  • A shared log exists with four columns.
  • Every enquirer is asked how they found you.
  • The log is updated weekly.
  • Fit rate is calculated monthly.
  • The top reason for poor fit has an action.

Next step

Go back through last month's social media enquiries and mark each fit or not fit. That gives you a baseline today.

Frequently asked questions

How do you measure lead quality from social media?

Use a fit rate: the number of enquiries that match your criteria divided by all enquiries from social media. Record the source, need, fit and outcome of each, and review the figure monthly. The reasons for poor fit show what to change in your content.

What makes a lead high quality?

A high-quality lead needs what you sell, is in the area or market you serve, has a suitable budget and is ready within a reasonable time. Define these criteria for your own business before measuring. Write them down so everyone logs enquiries the same way.

Is lead quality more important than lead quantity?

For most small businesses, yes. Every enquiry takes time to answer, so a smaller number of well-matched enquiries is more profitable than a large number that must be declined. Measure both, but let the fit rate decide what content you make more of next month.

How do I improve the quality of social media leads?

Find the most common reason enquiries do not fit and address it in your content. State your area, typical job size and services clearly in your bio and posts, and show examples of the work you want more of. Then re-measure after a month.
