Key takeaways

AI search tools, including Google's AI Overviews and assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, rely on the same foundations as search engines: crawlable links, clear structure and pages that state what they are about. Clear navigation helps them find your important pages and understand how they relate. Google says no special optimisation is needed beyond normal SEO practice.

  • AI tools need crawlable links, just like search engines.
  • Clear labels and headings tell them what each page covers.
  • Every key page should make sense on its own, not only in sequence.
  • Google says AI features use the same SEO best practices.

How do AI search tools use navigation?

AI search tools retrieve pages from a search index or their own crawl, then summarise them. Navigation determines which pages get found and how their topics are signalled. Google's guidance on AI features says the same SEO fundamentals apply: pages must be indexable, linked and clearly written. Hidden or script-only links are as much a problem for AI crawlers as for search.

What helps AI tools understand your site?

The habits that help are the ones that make structure explicit in text. AI tools work from text, so meaning carried only by layout or icons can be lost.

  • Plain HTML links in menus and pages.
  • Specific menu labels and page titles.
  • Clear headings that state each section's topic.
  • Breadcrumbs that show where a page sits.
  • Descriptive link text between related pages.
  • Business facts, such as services and areas, stated consistently.

Do you need a special file for AI crawlers?

Some sites publish an llms.txt file, a proposed convention that lists key pages and a short description for language models. It is not an official standard and Google does not use it for AI Overviews. It does no harm, but it is no substitute for clear navigation and crawlable pages.

Why should pages stand alone?

AI tools often quote a single section or page out of context. A service page that only makes sense after reading the homepage, or a section that says 'as mentioned above', is harder to quote accurately. Each key page should state the service, the audience and the location in its own words.

Can a chatbot replace navigation for AI-era visitors?

Not yet for most businesses. Many visitors arriving from an AI answer already know the summary and want to check details, prices or proof quickly. A clear menu serves them faster than a conversation. A chatbot can help with specific questions, but it should sit beside navigation, not replace it.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see: a business's services are described only in image tiles on the homepage, with no service pages and no text links. AI tools and search engines have little to go on. Creating a page per service, linked from a named menu item, gives them something specific to read and cite.

AI-ready navigation checklist

  • Menu and page links are plain HTML.
  • One page per key service, linked from the menu.
  • Specific page titles and headings.
  • Breadcrumbs on deeper pages.
  • Each page states service, audience and area.
  • Business facts consistent across pages.

Next step

Ask an AI assistant what your business offers and compare its answer with your menu.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to optimise my website for AI search?

Mostly, you need to do SEO well. Google says its AI features use the same foundations: indexable pages, crawlable links and helpful content. Clear navigation, specific page titles and self-contained pages make it easier for any AI tool to understand and quote you.

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a proposed convention for a plain text file at the root of a website that lists key pages for language models. It is not an official standard and is not used by Google's AI Overviews. It can complement, but not replace, clear navigation.

Can AI tools read JavaScript menus?

Some can render JavaScript, many cannot or do so inconsistently. The safest approach is to make sure every menu link is present in the HTML as a standard link with an href, so it works for search engines and AI crawlers alike.
