Key takeaways
Homepage Search Console data tells you what people searched before arriving, which shapes what they expect to find. Filter the Performance report to your homepage URL and look at queries: if most include your business name, the homepage mainly serves people who already know you. Non-branded queries show which services visitors expect the homepage to explain.
- Filter the Performance report to your homepage URL.
- Split branded queries from non-branded ones.
- Branded queries: make contact and the main action instant.
- Non-branded queries: make sure the homepage answers them or links on.

Chat on WhatsApp →What does Search Console show about the homepage?
Google Search Console's Performance report shows the queries that led to your pages appearing in Google, with impressions, clicks, click-through rate and average position. Filtered to the homepage, it tells you what visitors were looking for just before they arrived, which GA4 cannot.
How do you filter it to the homepage?
In Performance, add a page filter with your exact homepage URL, then open the Queries tab. Add a query filter that contains your business name to see branded searches, and switch it to 'does not contain' to see the rest. Compare the two groups' clicks.
What do branded and non-branded queries tell you?
Branded queries mean visitors already know you and want to act or check you out, so the homepage should make contact, reviews and the main action immediate. Non-branded queries, such as 'boiler repair Leeds', mean the homepage is ranking for a service, so it should answer that service quickly or link straight to its page.
What does a low click-through rate mean?
Many impressions with few clicks for branded queries can mean your listing looks unclear or another result, such as a directory or review site, is more appealing. Check your homepage's title and description in the results. For non-branded queries, a low position is the more likely cause.
When is Search Console data incomplete?
Search Console hides some rare queries for privacy, rounds some numbers and shows only Google search. It does not show Bing, maps or AI assistants. Treat it as a strong signal of intent rather than a complete record.
What does this look like in practice?
A pattern we see: an owner assumes the homepage attracts new customers searching for services, but Search Console shows almost all homepage clicks are for the business name. The homepage's job is to confirm and convert people who already know the firm, which changes what the hero should say.
Homepage Search Console checklist
- Filter Performance to your homepage URL.
- Split branded and non-branded queries.
- List the top 10 non-branded queries.
- Check the homepage answers or links to each.
- Review your title and description if CTR is low.
Next step
Filter Search Console to your homepage and write down the share of clicks from queries containing your name. That one number tells you who your homepage mostly serves.

Frequently asked questions
How do I see which searches bring people to my homepage?
In Google Search Console, open Performance, add a page filter for your exact homepage URL and look at the Queries tab. It lists the searches that showed your homepage in Google, with impressions, clicks and position.
What is a branded search?
A branded search includes your business name, such as 'Smith Plumbing reviews' or 'Smith Plumbing Leeds'. These visitors already know you, so the homepage should make it easy to confirm you are right and get in touch.
Why does my homepage get impressions but few clicks?
For branded queries, your listing may look unclear or other results, such as directories, may be more appealing. For other queries, a low ranking position is the likely cause. Check your title, description and position for the queries concerned.
