Key takeaways

Brand awareness is how many people know you exist; brand credibility is how many believe you can deliver. For most small firms, credibility should come first, because more awareness sends more people to a website that loses them. Awareness multiplies what credibility converts. Build belief on the site, then pay for reach.

  • Brand credibility: whether people believe you can deliver.
  • Brand awareness: how many people know your name.
  • Brand credibility: built mainly on the website and in reviews.
  • Brand awareness: built by ads, social, PR and word of mouth.

How do brand credibility and awareness differ?

Brand awareness is the share of potential buyers who recognise or recall your business. Brand credibility is the share who believe it is honest and competent. Awareness gets you considered; credibility gets you chosen. A firm can be well known and doubted, or little known and highly trusted by those who find it.

Which should a small business build first?

Build credibility first in most cases. Paying to send more visitors to a site with no proof, stock photos and vague copy wastes budget, because a larger share will leave. Once the website converts well, every pound spent on awareness works harder. The exception is a brand-new business with no visitors at all, which needs some reach to gather its first reviews.

How do the two work together?

Awareness and credibility reinforce each other. Familiar names are judged more credible, and credible firms get more referrals, which build awareness. In Edelman's 2019 research, 81% of people said they must be able to trust a brand to do what is right before buying. Awareness brings people to that test; credibility passes it.

How do you measure each?

Measure awareness through branded searches in Google Search Console, direct traffic and 'how did you hear about us' answers. Measure credibility through enquiry rate from new visitors, review volume and rating, and what prospects say in first calls. If awareness rises and enquiries do not, credibility is the bottleneck.

When should awareness come first?

Awareness should come first when the website already converts well, reviews are strong and the constraint is simply that too few people know you. It may also come first in a new local market where you need a base of customers to generate the reviews that build credibility.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see: a business doubles its ad budget and gets more visits but no more enquiries. The site has no reviews visible and a contact form only. Adding proof and a phone number first, then restoring the ad budget, produces the increase the extra spend could not.

Credibility before awareness checklist

  • Score your website's credibility before raising ad spend.
  • Check your enquiry rate from new visitors.
  • Make reviews and proof visible on landing pages.
  • Track branded searches as an awareness measure.
  • Increase reach once the site converts reliably.

Next step

Compare your enquiry rate this quarter with last quarter's traffic growth. If traffic rose and enquiries did not, fix credibility first.

Frequently asked questions

Is brand awareness more important than credibility?

Not for most small firms. Awareness gets you considered, but credibility gets you chosen. Building awareness for a business that visitors doubt wastes money. Make the website credible first, then invest in reach.

How does brand awareness affect credibility?

Familiarity tends to raise credibility, because people trust names they recognise. But awareness without substance can backfire if visitors find a careless website or poor reviews. The two reinforce each other when both are built.

How can a small business build brand credibility?

Show real people and work, display named and dated reviews, list company details, remove errors and out-of-date content, publish specific service details and respond quickly to enquiries. Most of this is done on the website and review platforms.
