Key takeaways

Before and after posts show a visible change you produced, which makes them among the most persuasive proof a business can share. They attract buyers when the caption states what the job involved, how long it took and its scale. Without that, they attract admiration.

  • Same angle, same light and same framing for both photos.
  • State scope, duration and scale in the caption.
  • Service firms can show before and after numbers.
  • Images must not be edited in a way that misleads.

Why do before and after posts work?

Before and after posts work because they compress the whole promise of a service into one glance: this was the problem, this is the result. The buyer does not have to trust a description. They can see it. The effect is strongest when the 'before' looks like their own situation.

How do you shoot a fair comparison?

Take the 'before' photo from a spot you can return to, and take the 'after' from the same place, at a similar time of day. Keep the framing identical. A comparison where the lighting or angle changes looks staged even when it is not, and it weakens the proof.

  • Mark where you stood for the first photo.
  • Use the same lens and orientation.
  • Shoot in similar light.
  • Take the 'before' on every job, as routine.

What should the caption say?

The caption should say what the picture cannot: what the customer wanted, what the work involved, how long it took, and the scale or price range. End with one next step. This is what turns a satisfying image into a post that brings a similar job.

  • The problem the customer came with.
  • What was done, in one or two lines.
  • Duration and scale or price range.
  • One next step.

How do service businesses use the format?

Service businesses use numbers or documents in place of photos. Show a metric before and after, a process shortened from six steps to two, or a cluttered report beside a clear one. Anonymise where needed. The principle is the same: a change the reader can see for themselves.

  • A measure: 'reply time, 2 days to 2 hours'.
  • A process: steps before and after.
  • A document: old layout beside new.
  • A calendar: owner's week before and after.

What are the rules on honesty?

The result shown must be genuine and typical enough not to mislead. Do not retouch the 'after', stage the 'before', or show a best-ever result as normal. In health and beauty the rules are stricter: prescription-only medicines must not be advertised to the public, and claims need evidence.

When should you not post one?

Do not post when the customer has not agreed, when the photo shows the inside of a home or a person without consent, or when the 'before' would embarrass the customer. Ask first, and offer to hide identifying details. A lost post is cheaper than a lost customer.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see with UK trades firms: plenty of 'after' photos and almost no 'before', because nobody thinks to take one at the start. Adding a 'before' photo to the first-day routine fixes the supply for good.

Before and after checklist

Check each pair.

  • Both photos share angle, framing and light.
  • Neither image is misleadingly edited.
  • The caption states scope, duration and scale.
  • The result is typical, or labelled otherwise.
  • The customer has agreed.
  • There is one next step.

Next step

Add 'take the before photo' to the start of every job from tomorrow. Post your first matched pair within a fortnight.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a good before and after post?

Take both photos from the same position in similar light, show them side by side or as two slides, and write a caption stating the problem, the work, the duration and the scale. Finish with one next step. Use a job of the kind you want to win again.

Are before and after photos allowed in advertising?

Yes, provided they are genuine and do not mislead. They must not be retouched to exaggerate the result, and an unusual outcome should not be presented as typical. Stricter rules apply to medical and cosmetic treatments. Label any result that is unusual so viewers are not misled.

Can a service business use before and after content?

Yes. Show a measure, process or document before and after your work, such as response time, the number of steps in a task or a report layout. Remove anything that identifies the customer unless they agree. A simple two-column graphic is enough to show the change.

Do I need permission to post photos of a customer's property?

You should ask. Images of a home or of people can identify the customer, and it is their private space. Get agreement in writing and offer to leave out the location and any identifying details. Record what they agreed to and where it may be used.
