Key takeaways

Fix social media mistakes in order of distance from the sale: replies first, then the link and contact route, then the profile, then content, then strategy. Mistakes near the sale waste interest that already exists and cost almost nothing to fix. Content and strategy fixes matter, but they take months to show.

  • 1. Replies: answer every message and comment within the working day.
  • 2. Path: make enquiring take 2 taps from any post.
  • 3. Profile: say what you do, where and how to contact you.
  • 4. Content and strategy: fix after the first 3 are working.

Why fix replies before content?

Fix replies first because a message from a buyer is the most valuable thing social media produces, and an unanswered one is lost value you have already earned. Better content brings more messages; if they still go unanswered, it simply loses more. Replies cost time, not money, and the effect shows within weeks.

What should you fix second?

Fix the path from post to enquiry second. Check that the bio link goes to a page about your current offer, that message and booking buttons work on a phone, and that contact details are correct everywhere. Each broken step loses a share of people who were ready to act.

When should you fix the profile and content?

Fix the profile third, in an afternoon: bio, profile image, highlights or pinned posts and contact details. Then turn to content: a clearer buyer, a next step on posts and less filler. Content fixes need six to twelve weeks of posting before you can judge them.

Are there mistakes to fix immediately whatever the order?

Yes: anything that breaks the law or risks the account. Unlabelled paid posts, customer photos without consent, a former employee as the only admin and a giveaway that breaks platform rules should be fixed the same day, before any other change.

When does this order not apply?

If nobody is messaging at all, there are no replies to fix, so start with the profile and the audience. And if you are on a platform your buyers do not use, fix that first, because nothing downstream can work. The order assumes some interest already exists.

How do you check the order is right for you?

Check the order by looking for the first broken step from a buyer's point of view. Start at a post, tap through to the profile, take the contact action and see what happens next. The first point where a real buyer would stall or wait is your first fix, whatever this guide's general order says.

  • Does the post say what to do next?
  • Does the profile confirm what you do and where?
  • Does the contact button or link work on a phone?
  • Does a person reply within the working day?

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see: an owner who wants to start with a new content plan, while the inbox shows a dozen unanswered enquiries from the last month. Clearing and staffing the inbox first usually produces more work within a fortnight than the content plan would in a quarter.

Priority checklist

  • Fix legal and access risks the same day.
  • Answer every open message and comment.
  • Test the path from post to enquiry on a phone.
  • Rewrite the profile in one afternoon.
  • Then plan content for the next 90 days.

Next step

Open your inbox now and count messages with no reply. If the number is above zero, you know where to start.

Frequently asked questions

What is the quickest social media fix for a small business?

Answering every message and comment within the working day. It costs nothing, takes effect immediately, and recovers interest you have already earned. The second quickest is pointing your bio link at a page about your current offer rather than the home page.

Should I fix my content or my profile first?

Fix the profile first. It takes an afternoon and every visitor sees it. Content fixes take weeks to show results, and they work better once the profile clearly says what you do and how to get in touch.

How many social media mistakes should I fix at once?

One area at a time, so you can see what changed. Fix legal and access risks immediately, then work through replies, path, profile and content over about 90 days, reviewing enquiries each month.
