Key takeaways

Social media spend after raising investment should grow in steps, not in one leap. Prove your cost per customer with a small budget first, then scale only while it holds. Fresh funding makes it tempting to buy reach quickly, but money spent before the numbers work shortens your runway without buying learning.

  • Test with 5–10% of the marketing allocation before scaling.
  • Scale ad spend by about 20% a week while cost per customer holds.
  • Keep at least 6 months of planned marketing in reserve.
  • Report spend against customers, not reach, to investors.

Why not spend heavily straight away?

Because platforms reward tested offers and punish untested ones with high costs. A large budget on an unproven message buys expensive lessons quickly. Spending small first tells you which audience, offer and creative produce customers, so the larger budget is spent on what already works.

What does a staged plan look like?

Illustrative plan for a £60,000 marketing allocation: £5,000 over the first eight weeks to test two offers and two audiences; then £2,500 to £5,000 a month on the winner, stepping up while cost per customer holds; with at least six months of that spend held back as runway.

  • Weeks 1–8: test offers and audiences on a small budget.
  • Months 3–6: scale the winner in weekly steps.
  • Throughout: hold six months of spend in reserve.

What should you measure for investors?

Customer acquisition cost by channel, payback period, and how both change as spend rises. Investors want to see that each extra pound still buys customers profitably. Follower growth and impressions are useful context but rarely answer the question they are asking.

When is heavy early spend justified?

When the product already sells through another channel and the numbers are known, or when there is a short window, such as a launch tied to a season or event. Even then, cap the budget and agree in advance what result triggers more spend and what result stops it.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see: a newly funded business commits a large monthly agency retainer and ad budget on day one, before testing its message. Restarting with a smaller test usually finds the offer that works within weeks, and the remaining funding then goes much further.

Post-investment checklist

  • Set aside a small test budget before scaling.
  • Test at least two offers and two audiences.
  • Scale the winner in steps while costs hold.
  • Keep six months of marketing spend in reserve.
  • Report CAC and payback to investors monthly.

Next step

Write your test budget, the result that triggers scaling and the result that stops it. Share that one paragraph with your investors before spending.

Frequently asked questions

How much of my funding should go on marketing?

It depends on the business, but marketing spend should be released in stages tied to proven acquisition costs rather than allocated in one block. Many early-stage businesses test with a small share first and scale only once cost per customer and payback are known and acceptable.

Should I hire a marketing agency after raising money?

Possibly, but scope the first three months around testing rather than volume. Agree what the agency must learn, how results will be reported and what happens if tests fail. A long fixed contract signed before any testing is a common way funding gets used up.

How quickly can I scale social ads?

Once a campaign produces customers at an acceptable cost, raising spend by around 20% a week is a steady pace. Watch cost per customer at each step. If it rises sharply, hold the budget and improve the offer or creative before pushing further.
