Short answer

Hospitality social media converts when it answers booking questions rather than showing food. The highest-value content for most UK venues is availability, private hire capacity, dietary handling and what the experience is actually like. Instagram and Facebook, with a fast response standard on messages.

  • Answer booking questions: capacity, parking, dietary requirements, deposits, timings.
  • Private hire and groups are usually the most profitable line and the least posted about.
  • Post availability. This week we have a table for six on Thursday converts immediately.
  • Respond to messages inside two hours in service-adjacent businesses. Bookings decay fast.
  • Reviews across Google, Facebook and booking platforms are part of the same job.

Why does food photography alone not convert?

Because it answers a question nobody is blocked on. A prospective customer scrolling your feed is usually trying to work out whether you suit an occasion they already have in mind, and photographs of plates do not answer that.

The questions blocking a booking are practical: can you fit fourteen people, is there parking, can you handle a gluten allergy, how long do we get the table, is it too loud for my parents. Content that answers those converts; content that shows the food supports it.

What should a venue post?

A mix weighted towards the practical, with the atmosphere carried visually underneath it.

  • Availability this week, named specifically. Tables, times, spaces.
  • Private hire: capacity, layout, minimum spend, what is included.
  • Dietary handling, allergens and how you manage them properly.
  • The people: kitchen, bar, the person who will greet them.
  • The occasion: what a birthday, a wake or a work lunch actually looks like here.
  • Seasonal booking windows, opened early. Christmas is sold in September.

Why is private hire under-posted?

Because it is not photogenic in the way a plate is, and because teams assume people will ask. In practice, most people will not ask. They will assume you are not suitable and book somewhere that showed them a room set for twenty.

For most UK venues, group and private bookings carry better margin and better predictability than walk-in covers. Posting the capacity, the layout options and the price structure once a fortnight is usually the single highest-return change available.

How fast do you need to respond?

Faster than in most sectors. Hospitality enquiries are usually date-specific and comparative, with someone messaging three venues about the same Saturday. A two-hour reply during opening hours is a realistic standard and a genuine advantage.

Use saved replies for the five questions you receive constantly, and set an accurate away message with a real timeframe rather than a generic apology.

How should you handle reviews?

As a single job across Google, Facebook and any booking platforms you use. Reply to all of them, including the good ones, and reply to criticism calmly and specifically.

In hospitality the reply is read more widely than in most sectors, because people research venues comparatively and read the one-star reviews first. A measured, specific response to a complaint is one of the most effective trust signals a venue can produce.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern in hospitality: strong photography, a large local following, and private hire enquiries arriving roughly monthly. The booking emails usually show most enquiries concern groups of eight to twenty and ask about parking, dietary handling and deposits.

A fortnightly private hire post covering capacity and price structure, a highlight answering the three practical questions, and a two-hour response standard is what moves it, with no change to the photography at all.

How should you plan around the hospitality calendar?

Work backwards from the booking window rather than from the event. For most UK venues that means Christmas content starts in September, Valentine's and Mother's Day around six weeks out, and summer garden or terrace content the moment the forecast turns rather than on a fixed date.

The quieter periods need more planning than the peaks, not less. January and early February are when a local venue either has a reason for people to come out or does not, and that content has to be planned in December when the team is busiest.

Build the year once, as twelve lines with the booking window rather than the date. It takes an hour and removes the recurring problem of posting about an occasion after people have already booked somewhere else.

  • Plan from the booking window, not the event date.
  • Christmas starts in September for most UK venues.
  • Quiet months need more planning than peaks.
  • One hour, twelve lines, reviewed annually.

Next step

If your feed looks appetising and your bookings are flat, the gap is almost certainly the practical questions nobody is answering.

Frequently asked questions

What should a restaurant post on social media?

Availability, private hire capacity and pricing, dietary handling, the people who work there, and what specific occasions look like at your venue. Food photography supports these but rarely converts on its own, because it answers a question nobody was blocked on.

How quickly should a venue reply to social media enquiries?

Within two hours during opening hours. Hospitality enquiries are date-specific and comparative, with people messaging several venues about the same evening, so the first useful reply frequently wins the booking regardless of price.

How do we get more private hire bookings from social media?

Post the capacity, layout options, minimum spend and what is included, once a fortnight. Most people will not ask whether you can host their group; they will assume you cannot and book somewhere that showed them a room set up for it.

When should we start posting about Christmas bookings?

September for most UK venues, with the practical details rather than just the menu: capacity, deposit terms, timings and what happens if numbers change. Seasonal booking windows open far earlier than most venues start posting about them.
