Key takeaways

VAT on Facebook ads in the UK depends on whether you give the platform a valid UK VAT number. Ads are often billed by an overseas entity, so VAT-registered businesses that provide their number usually account for VAT themselves under the reverse charge. Businesses without a VAT number are usually charged VAT on top. Check with your accountant.

  • VAT-registered: usually reverse charge, so no VAT on the invoice.
  • Not VAT-registered: VAT is usually added to what you pay.
  • Add your VAT number in the ad account's business settings.
  • Keep invoices or receipts for your records.

Why do some invoices show no VAT?

When a UK VAT-registered business buys services such as advertising from a supplier outside the UK, the reverse charge usually applies: you account for the VAT on your own return as both output and input tax. HMRC's place of supply guidance (VAT Notice 741A) explains the rules.

What if you are not VAT-registered?

Platforms usually treat you as not providing a VAT number and add UK VAT to the cost, which you cannot reclaim. That raises the real cost of each ad pound. Budget for it: £500 of ad spend can cost about £600 once 20% VAT is added.

How do you set it up correctly?

Add your business name, address and VAT number in the ad account's billing or business settings before spending. Download invoices or receipts monthly. If you registered for VAT after you started advertising, update the settings, because the platform will not know automatically.

  • Enter business details and VAT number.
  • Check the billing country is correct.
  • Download invoices monthly.
  • Update details if your VAT status changes.

Are ad costs tax deductible?

Advertising is generally an allowable business expense for income or corporation tax, but rules on VAT and deductibility depend on your circumstances. Your accountant should confirm the treatment, especially for reverse charge entries on your VAT return.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see: a business registers for VAT but never adds its number to the ad account, so it keeps paying VAT it cannot easily recover. Updating the settings usually takes minutes; correcting past invoices can take much longer.

VAT checklist

  • Confirm your VAT status.
  • Add your VAT number to each ad account.
  • Budget for VAT if you are not registered.
  • Download invoices monthly.
  • Ask your accountant about reverse charge entries.

Next step

Open the billing settings of every ad account you use and check the business details and VAT number. Correct anything out of date before the next billing date.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay VAT on Facebook ads in the UK?

If you are VAT-registered and add your VAT number, the reverse charge usually applies, so the invoice shows no VAT and you account for it on your return. If you are not registered, VAT is usually added to what you pay. Confirm the treatment with your accountant.

What is the reverse charge?

The reverse charge is a VAT rule where the business buying certain services from abroad accounts for the VAT itself, instead of the supplier charging it. For most UK VAT-registered businesses it has no net cost, because the same amount is entered as output and input tax.

Can I reclaim VAT on ads if I register later?

There are rules about reclaiming VAT on some costs incurred before registration, with time limits. Ask your accountant whether past ad spend qualifies, and update your ad account details as soon as you register so future invoices are correct. If in doubt, check the regulator's current guidance or take professional advice before you act.
