Chat on WhatsApp →Are social media agency fees an allowable expense?
Marketing costs, including social media management, content creation and paid ads, are generally allowable business expenses when incurred wholly and exclusively for the business. That applies to sole traders, partnerships and limited companies. Personal or mixed-use spending needs care.
Can you reclaim VAT on agency fees?
If your business is VAT registered, you can usually reclaim the VAT charged on a UK agency's invoice as input tax, subject to the normal rules. Registration is compulsory once taxable turnover passes £90,000. Businesses below the threshold that are not registered cannot reclaim VAT.
What changes with an overseas agency?
Services from an overseas supplier to a UK business are usually covered by the reverse charge under HMRC's place of supply rules. The supplier does not charge UK VAT, and a VAT-registered UK business accounts for it on its own return. Your accountant can confirm how it applies.
Are ad spend and influencer costs deductible too?
Paid social media ad spend is generally an allowable marketing expense. Paying creators for promotion is usually treated as advertising too. Gifts and hospitality can be treated differently, so ask your accountant about anything that looks like entertainment or gifts rather than paid promotion.
What records should you keep?
Keep every agency invoice, ad platform receipt and contract. Limited companies must keep accounting records, generally for six years. Sole traders must keep business records too. Clear invoices that separate the management fee, ad spend and VAT make your accountant's job much easier.
What does this look like in practice?
A pattern we see with UK small businesses: ad spend, agency fees and tool subscriptions all sit on one card statement, so year-end is messy. Global Bridge Labs (GBL) invoices the management fee separately and recommends ad spend is paid directly from the client's own ad account, so each cost has its own record.
Tax records checklist
Keep these for every supplier.

Frequently asked questions
Can I claim social media marketing on my tax return?
Generally yes. Social media management fees, content creation and ad spend incurred wholly and exclusively for your business are usually allowable expenses for sole traders and deductible for limited companies. Keep invoices and receipts, and check your own position with an accountant.
Can I reclaim VAT on my social media agency invoice?
If your business is VAT registered, you can usually reclaim VAT charged on a UK agency's invoice, subject to the normal rules. If you are not registered, which is allowed below the £90,000 threshold, you cannot reclaim it, so compare quotes including VAT.
Does an overseas social media agency charge VAT?
Usually not. Services supplied from overseas to a UK business normally fall under the reverse charge, so the UK business accounts for VAT on its own return if VAT registered. HMRC's place of supply guidance explains the rules, and your accountant can confirm them.
How long should I keep agency invoices?
Limited companies must generally keep accounting records for six years from the end of the financial year. Sole traders must also keep business records for set periods. Keeping invoices, contracts and ad receipts together makes tax returns and any HMRC questions easier.
