Key takeaways

It is fine to reshare old social media posts when they are evergreen and did well the first time. Most followers did not see the original. Wait at least three months, refresh the caption or image, and plan one or two reshares a month in the calendar. Reshares fill slots in busy months without lowering the standard.

  • Wait at least 3 months before resharing a post.
  • 1 or 2 reshares a month is a sensible share.
  • Refresh the caption, cover image or opening line.
  • Reshare evergreen help and proof posts, not old offers.

Why reshare old posts?

Reshare them because most of your followers did not see the original: on most platforms a post reaches only a share of your followers, and new followers arrived since. A post that worked once is likely to work again, and resharing it costs a fraction of making something new. It is a planned way to keep slots filled.

Which posts should you reshare?

Reshare evergreen posts that did well the first time: how-to posts, answers to common questions, strong before-and-afters, reviews and introductions to the team (if they still work for you). Do not reshare old offers, outdated prices, seasonal posts out of season, or anything about people who have left.

How do you refresh a reshare?

Refresh it by changing at least one thing: a new first line, an updated cover image, an extra tip, or a different format, such as turning a photo post into a carousel. Check every fact and price is still right. A small change makes it feel new to those who saw it and can help it perform as a fresh post.

How do reshares fit the calendar?

Plan one or two reshares a month in normal slots, marked 'reshare' in the calendar. They are especially useful in busy months, holidays and the first week of a new month. Keep a reshare list in your archive so you are not searching through old posts during planning.

When is resharing a bad idea?

It is a bad idea when reshares take over, so the account looks stale, when the original post failed, or when the content is out of date. If more than a quarter of the month is reshares, the backlog of new ideas needs attention.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see: an account with a few excellent how-to posts from a year ago, never seen by most current followers, and a team struggling to fill slots. Resharing one refreshed classic a month usually does as well as the original and eases the workload.

Frequently asked questions

Is it OK to repost old content on social media?

Yes, if it is evergreen, still accurate and did well the first time. Most followers did not see the original. Wait at least three months and refresh the caption or image so it feels new.

How often can I reshare a post?

Wait at least three months between reshares of the same post, and keep reshares to one or two a month. If reshares fill more than about a quarter of your calendar, it is time to add new ideas to the backlog.

Which posts should not be reshared?

Old offers, outdated prices, seasonal posts out of season, posts featuring people who have left, and anything that did badly the first time. Check every fact, price and link before resharing anything.
