Key takeaways

The cost of managing multiple social media platforms does not double with each channel. Most UK retainers include two. As an indication, an extra channel that reuses existing content adds about £300–£800 a month for adaptation and replies. A channel needing its own content costs far more.

  • £300–£800 a month is the indicative cost of adding a channel that reuses content.
  • Most UK SME retainers of £950–£2,500 cover two channels.
  • A channel needing original video can cost as much as a new retainer.
  • Two channels done well beat four done thinly.

Why does each channel add cost?

Each channel adds three kinds of work: adapting content to its format, answering a separate inbox and reporting on a separate set of numbers. Publishing itself is quick. It is the adaptation and the replies that take the hours.

How much does an extra channel cost?

Adapting and managing an extra channel from existing content takes about 4 to 8 hours a month, or roughly £300–£800 at the £75–£100 an hour implied by typical UK retainers. A channel that needs its own video, such as TikTok, adds much more. These are indicative figures, not a GBL price list.

  • Facebook added to Instagram: at the low end, shared tools and content.
  • LinkedIn added to a consumer plan: mid range, different tone needed.
  • Pinterest added to a visual plan: low, little reply work.
  • TikTok added to an image-led plan: high, needs original video.

How many channels should a retainer cover?

Two is the sensible default for a small business. It covers your main audience and one supporting channel without spreading production thin. Global Bridge Labs (GBL) recommends two to start, chosen by where your buyers are, and adds channels once those are performing.

When does adding a channel pay?

Adding a channel pays when the first two are producing enquiries, when a clear group of buyers sits on the new channel, and when content can be reused with little extra work. Adding a channel to fix weak results on the existing ones spreads the same problem wider.

Which channels are cheapest to combine?

Channels that share a format are cheapest to combine. Instagram and Facebook share tools and images. TikTok, Reels and Shorts share vertical video. LinkedIn stands apart, because its tone and audience differ, so content usually needs rewriting.

When is one channel the better buy?

One channel is the better buy when the budget is under about £950 a month or when nearly all your buyers are in one place. A single channel with replies handled and results reported does more than three channels that only receive scheduled posts.

What does it cost to remove a channel?

Removing a channel should lower the fee by roughly what adding it would cost, though some agencies resist. Agree the rule at the start. Decide too what happens to the profile: keep it accurate with a pinned post pointing to your active channels, or close it properly.

  • Agree the fee reduction in advance.
  • Pin a post that points to your active channels.
  • Keep contact details accurate.
  • Or close the account properly.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see when UK businesses review their plan: four channels on a small retainer, each receiving the same graphic and no replies. Cutting to two and using the freed hours for video and community management usually lifts enquiries without raising the fee.

Channel cost checklist

Ask these before adding a channel.

  • Are the current channels producing enquiries?
  • Who is on the new channel that you cannot reach now?
  • Can existing content be reused?
  • Who answers the new inbox?
  • What does the agency charge to add and to remove it?

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to add another social media platform?

As an indication, £300–£800 a month when the new channel reuses existing content, covering adaptation, replies and reporting. A channel that needs original video, such as TikTok, costs considerably more. Ask for the price to add and to remove a channel before you sign.

How many platforms are included in a social media retainer?

Most UK SME retainers in the £950–£2,500 band cover two channels. Additional channels are charged as extras, so ask for the price of adding and removing one before you sign. Check which two are meant.

Is it cheaper to manage all platforms with one agency?

Usually. One agency can reuse content and report in one place. Splitting channels across suppliers duplicates planning and tends to produce an inconsistent brand voice. The exception is a specialist need, such as LinkedIn ads.

Should a small business be on every social media platform?

No. Two channels chosen by where your buyers are, managed properly with replies and reporting, outperform four or five managed thinly. Add a channel only when the first two are working. Depth on two beats presence on five.
