Key takeaways

Facebook ad placements decide where your ads appear: feeds, Stories, Reels, Messenger and partner apps. On a small budget, automatic placements usually give the lowest cost per result, because Meta can use the cheapest space. Exclude a placement only when it brings poor-quality clicks or leads, and check the breakdown before deciding.

  • Automatic placements usually give the lowest cost per result.
  • Check results by placement before excluding any.
  • Exclude placements that bring junk clicks or leads.
  • Make creative that fits square and vertical formats.

Why do automatic placements often cost less?

Meta can move spend to whichever placement is cheapest for your goal at any moment. Restricting placements narrows the space it can buy, which can raise costs on small budgets. Advantage+ placements is Meta's name for this automatic setting.

When should you exclude a placement?

When the breakdown shows a placement producing many cheap clicks but few enquiries, or leads that never answer. Partner app placements are a common example for lead forms. Compare cost per real enquiry, not cost per click, before excluding.

How do you check where money goes?

In Ads Manager, use the breakdown by placement to see spend, results and cost for each. Look at a month of data, not a few days. If one placement takes most spend and brings good results, that is fine; if it takes spend with nothing to show, act.

What creative works across placements?

Vertical video or images for Stories and Reels, and square or vertical for feeds. Keep text away from edges where interface buttons sit. Without suitable creative, automatic placements crop ads awkwardly and some placements perform poorly.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see: a lead form campaign shows a low cost per lead, but many leads never answer. The placement breakdown points to partner apps. Excluding that placement raises cost per lead slightly but usually lowers cost per real conversation.

Placements checklist

  • Start with automatic placements.
  • Prepare vertical and square creative.
  • Review the placement breakdown monthly.
  • Judge on cost per real enquiry.
  • Exclude only placements that fail that test.

Next step

Open last month's results broken down by placement. Mark any placement with spend but few genuine enquiries.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use automatic placements on Facebook ads?

For most small budgets, yes. Automatic placements let Meta spend where results are cheapest, which usually lowers cost per result. Review the placement breakdown monthly and exclude only placements that bring poor-quality clicks or leads, judged on genuine enquiries rather than clicks.

Is Instagram cheaper than Facebook for ads?

It depends on audience and format. Costs vary by placement, season and creative, so one is not always cheaper. Running both through automatic placements lets Meta find the cheaper option for each audience, and the breakdown shows which worked for you.

What is the Audience Network?

Meta's Audience Network shows ads in partner apps outside Facebook and Instagram. It can be cheap, but for some advertisers it brings accidental clicks or low-quality leads. Check its results separately and exclude it if genuine enquiries from it are poor.
