Key takeaways

A cold audience has never heard of you, a warm audience has engaged with you, and a hot audience has shown buying intent. Each needs a different message. Most small businesses speak to cold audiences with offers, and to warm audiences with nothing at all. Reverse that.

  • Cold: never engaged. Show useful content, not offers.
  • Warm: followed, watched or visited. Show proof and the offer.
  • Hot: messaged, clicked to book or asked a price. Reply and follow up.
  • Warm audiences are small, cheap to reach and convert best.

What do cold, warm and hot mean?

A warm audience on social media is the group of people who have already interacted with a business, by following, watching videos, engaging with posts, or visiting its website, but have not yet bought. Cold audiences have had no contact. Hot audiences have shown clear intent, such as messaging or starting a booking.

What should you say to each audience?

Say something useful to cold audiences, prove yourself to warm ones, and help hot ones decide. Offering a discount to strangers who have never seen your work wastes the offer. Showing a tips video to someone who asked for a quote yesterday wastes their intent.

  • Cold: a tip, a result, a local story. No ask, or a soft follow.
  • Warm: a case study, a review, the offer and how to take it.
  • Hot: a fast reply, a clear price or range, a booking slot.

How do you build a warm audience for adverts?

Build warm audiences in Meta Ads Manager as custom audiences from Instagram or Facebook engagement, video viewers or page followers. LinkedIn offers similar matched audiences from page visitors and video viewers. Website visitor audiences need a tracking pixel and, in the UK, cookie consent first under PECR. Engagement audiences on the platform itself do not.

How do you spot a hot follower?

A hot follower asks about price, availability or area, saves several posts in a short time, clicks your booking or quote link, or replies to a story with a question. These signals deserve a reply from a person, not an automated message, within the working hour.

Why do warm audiences convert better?

Warm audiences convert better because they already recognise the business and have chosen to pay attention. The offer reaches people with some trust in place. They are also small, so a modest budget reaches them often enough to be noticed, which is rarely true of a cold audience of tens of thousands.

When is targeting warm audiences not enough?

Warm audiences run out. If yours is a few hundred people, showing them the same offer every day will annoy them, and growth stops. Keep some effort, paid or unpaid, on reaching new cold audiences who fit, so the warm pool keeps refilling. Rest the offer adverts when frequency climbs.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see: a small paid budget spread across a broad cold audience with an offer advert, and no adverts at all to the people who watched last month's videos. Moving part of the budget to a warm video-viewer audience with a case study and the offer is usually the first change we suggest.

Audience checklist

  • List your cold, warm and hot audiences and their size.
  • Match one message type to each.
  • Build engagement and video-viewer audiences in Meta.
  • Add a website audience only with cookie consent.
  • Reply personally to every hot signal.
  • Keep refilling the warm pool with useful content.

Next step

Check how many people have engaged with your account in the last 90 days. That is your warm audience, and it is your first place to show the offer.

Frequently asked questions

What is a warm audience on social media?

A warm audience is people who have already interacted with your business, by following, engaging, watching videos or visiting your website, but have not bought yet. They know who you are, so proof and an offer usually work better with them than with strangers.

What is the difference between a cold and warm audience?

A cold audience has had no contact with your business. A warm audience has. Cold audiences need useful or interesting content to earn attention. Warm audiences are ready for proof and a clear offer. Treating the two the same wastes money on both.

How do I warm up a cold audience?

Show them content that is useful to your buyer without asking for anything: tips, results, short demonstrations. People who watch or engage join your warm audience. Then show those people proof and your offer. Expect warming to take weeks of consistent posting, not days.
