Key takeaways
A social media call to action is the line that tells a reader what to do next. The ones that bring enquiries are specific, low effort and matched to how ready the reader is. Use one per post. A post with three requests usually gets none of them.
- 1 call to action per post. Three competing requests get ignored.
- Match the ask to readiness: save, message or book.
- Say what happens next and how long it takes.
- Asking for a photo or postcode is easier than asking for a call.

Chat on WhatsApp →What is a call to action on social media?
A call to action (CTA) is a short instruction at the end of a post that names one next step, such as sending a message, saving the post or booking a visit. Without one, even an interested buyer has to work out what to do, and most will not.
Which call to action suits which post?
Match the ask to the reader's readiness. Educational posts suit a small ask such as saving or following. Proof posts suit a message. Decision posts suit a booking or a quote request. Asking a stranger to book a consultation after one tip is too much too soon.
- Tip or explanation: 'Save this for your next quote.'
- Case study: 'Message us your postcode for availability.'
- How it works: 'Book a 20-minute survey slot.'
- Offer: 'Reply YES and we will send the details.'
How do you word a call to action?
Start with a verb, name the action and say what the reader gets. 'Send us a photo of the damage and we will reply with a first opinion today' beats 'Get in touch'. Setting the expectation of what happens next removes the main reason people hesitate.
- Verb first: send, message, save, book.
- Name what they get back.
- Give a timescale where you can keep it.
- Keep it to one sentence.

Chat on WhatsApp →Should the call to action be a message, a link or a call?
For most small businesses a message is the easiest first step, because it stays inside the app and feels low commitment. Links suit bookings and longer information. Phone calls suit urgent services. Offer the route your buyers already use, and be sure someone answers it promptly.
Does every post need a call to action?
Nearly every post benefits from one, but it need not be a sales request. A community or team post can simply invite a comment. What to avoid is the hard sell on every post, which tires followers, and the opposite habit of never asking for anything.
What are the rules on urgency and offers?
Urgency must be real. UK consumer law prohibits false claims that an offer is available only for a limited time, and the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 strengthened enforcement. If you say 'three slots left', there must be three slots. State genuine deadlines plainly.
What does this look like in practice?
A pattern we see with UK service firms: posts end with a website address, a phone number, an email and 'link in bio' together. Replacing all four with one line asking for a photo and postcode by message tends to produce more replies and better information in each.
Call to action checklist
Check the last line of each post.
- There is exactly one request.
- It starts with a verb.
- It fits how ready the reader is.
- It says what happens next.
- Any urgency is real.
- Someone is ready to respond.
Next step
Choose the single action you most want from social media this month and write one sentence asking for it. Use it on every proof post.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good call to action for social media?
One that names a single, easy action and what the reader gets, such as 'Send us a photo and we will reply with a first opinion today'. It should fit how ready the reader is and be something you can respond to quickly.
How many calls to action should a post have?
One. Several competing requests split attention and reduce the chance of any being followed. If you need both a message and a link, choose the one that suits the post and put the other in your bio. Decide the one action before writing the post.
Is 'link in bio' an effective call to action?
It works for bookings and longer information when the link goes straight to the relevant page. As a default on every post it is weak, because it asks the reader to leave the post and search. A direct message is usually easier.
Can I say an offer is ending soon?
Only if it is true. False limited-time claims are prohibited under UK consumer law. State the real end date or the real number of places, and do not extend it quietly afterwards. Regulators treat false urgency as a misleading practice, and customers notice it too.
