Key takeaways

Facebook ads are more expensive in Q4 because large retailers raise spend before Black Friday and Christmas, and ad auctions get more competitive for the same audiences. Costs per 1,000 impressions often rise through November and early December. Small businesses should start earlier, lean on warm audiences during the peak and avoid it if they are not seasonal.

  • Ad auctions get busier from October as big brands spend more.
  • Costs often peak around Black Friday and early December.
  • Start seasonal campaigns in October, before the rush.
  • Non-seasonal businesses can cut cold spend at the peak.

Why do costs rise in Q4?

Social ads are sold in auctions. When many advertisers want the same people at the same time, the price of reaching them rises. In the run-up to Christmas, retailers and consumer brands raise budgets sharply, so a small business pays more for the same reach, even with the same ad.

How should a seasonal business plan for it?

Start in October, when costs are lower, to build awareness and warm audiences. In the November and December peak, put more budget into retargeting those people, who are cheaper to convert. Have creative ready early, because ad review can take longer when volumes are high.

  • October: prospecting and building warm audiences.
  • November to mid-December: retargeting and offers.
  • Late December: scale down unless you sell into January.

What should a non-seasonal business do?

If your customers do not buy more at Christmas, consider reducing cold prospecting in late November and early December, when you pay peak prices for people distracted by gift shopping. Keep organic posting and retargeting going, and move the saved budget into January.

How do you measure whether Q4 spend paid off?

Compare cost per sale or enquiry with October and with last year's Q4, not just CPM. Higher costs can be fine if conversion rates and order values also rise. If cost per result rises faster than order value, pull back.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see: a local service business keeps the same ad spend through December and sees cost per enquiry rise while bookings fall. Pausing cold ads for three weeks and restarting in January usually improves the year's average cost per enquiry.

Q4 checklist

  • Decide whether your buyers buy more at Christmas.
  • Start seasonal prospecting in October.
  • Prepare and submit creative early.
  • Shift to retargeting at the peak.
  • Judge on cost per sale, not CPM.

Frequently asked questions

Why are Facebook ads more expensive in Q4?

Because more advertisers compete for the same audiences before Black Friday and Christmas. Ads are sold in auctions, so when large retailers increase budgets, the cost of reaching each person rises for everyone. Costs often peak in late November and early December, then fall in January.

Should small businesses advertise at Christmas?

If customers buy more from you at Christmas, yes, but start early in October and lean on retargeting during the peak. If your sales do not rise at Christmas, reducing cold ad spend in the busiest weeks and moving it into January is often better value.

When should I launch Black Friday ads?

Build awareness and warm audiences from October, then run your offer to those audiences in the Black Friday week. Submitting creative early avoids delays in ad review. Launching cold campaigns only in the final week means paying peak prices to reach strangers.
