Key takeaways
For a UK local business, fix the Google Business Profile before you touch social media. It reaches people actively searching for what you sell, it costs about an hour a week, and it is the only channel where someone finds you at the exact moment they need you.
- Google Business Profile: high intent, roughly 1 hour a week, direct calls and directions.
- Social media: lower intent, 3-8 hours a week per channel, slower payback.
- Reviews, photos, hours and services are the four fields that move local ranking.
- GBP cannot build a brand or reach people who are not searching. Social can.
- Sequence: GBP first, then one social channel, then a second. Never the reverse.

Chat on WhatsApp →Which matters more for a local business?
The Google Business Profile, by a clear margin, for any business serving a geographic area. Someone searching emergency plumber near me is a buyer with a problem right now, and the profile is what decides whether they call you or the business listed above you.
Social media reaches people who were not looking, which is valuable and slower. For a business with limited hours, doing the profile properly first is simply better sequencing: it captures demand that already exists before you spend money creating more.
What actually moves local ranking?
Google's own local ranking guidance names relevance, distance and prominence. The parts you control sit mostly in four fields, and most UK businesses have at least two of them wrong.
- Categories and services: specific, complete, and matching what people search.
- Reviews: recent, numerous, and responded to. Recency matters as much as volume.
- Photos: current, of the real premises and work, updated at least monthly.
- Hours: correct including bank holidays. Wrong hours generate one-star reviews.
- Questions and answers: answered by you before a customer answers them wrongly.
How many hours does a profile take?
Roughly four hours to set up properly, then about an hour a week to maintain: responding to reviews, adding photos, answering questions and keeping hours current.
Compare that with 3-8 hours a week for a single social channel and the return per hour is not close for a local service business. This is the most under-invested channel we encounter, and it is under-invested precisely because it feels like admin rather than marketing.

Chat on WhatsApp →What can a Google Business Profile not do?
Three things, and they are the reasons social media still earns its place. It cannot reach anyone who is not already searching, so it captures demand rather than creating it. It cannot build a personality or a reason to prefer you beyond proximity and rating. And it gives you no relationship with people who are not yet ready to buy.
That is why the sequence matters more than the choice. Profile first to capture what exists, then a social channel to create what does not, then a second channel once the first is genuinely working.
How do reviews change the comparison?
They make the profile compounding in a way social posts are not. A review written today is still influencing buying decisions in two years, and it appears at the exact moment someone is choosing between you and two competitors.
Ask every satisfied customer, make it one tap by sending the review link over WhatsApp, and respond to every review including the poor ones. UK consumer protection rules on reviews are clear that reviews must be genuine, so never incentivise a positive rating or write them yourself. The CMA has been explicit about this.
What does this look like in practice?
A UK independent garage was posting three times a week on two social channels and had a Google Business Profile with the wrong opening hours, eleven reviews, and photographs from when the business opened.
Pausing social for six weeks and spending the hours on the profile instead, asking every customer for a review and photographing current work weekly, produced more booked jobs than the previous six months of posting. Social resumed afterwards on one channel, with the profile as the priority it should always have been.
What happens when the profile is wrong?
It costs you directly and visibly. Wrong opening hours are the most reliable generator of one-star reviews in UK local business, because someone drove to you and you were shut, and no apology recovers that review.
Out-of-date photographs have a quieter cost. A prospect comparing three businesses will choose the one whose premises look current, and an image from six years ago reads as a business that has stopped caring. Both problems take minutes to fix and almost nobody checks them until something goes wrong.
Next step
Open your Google Business Profile today and check four things: are the hours right, is the most recent photo from this quarter, is the most recent review from this month, and are all your services listed. Fix those before you plan another social post.

Frequently asked questions
Is Google Business Profile more important than social media?
For local businesses, yes. It reaches people searching for what you sell at the moment they need it, costs around an hour a week to maintain, and drives calls and directions directly. Social media reaches people who were not looking, which is slower.
How often should you update a Google Business Profile?
Weekly for reviews and questions, monthly for photos, and immediately for any change to hours or services. Recency is a genuine signal, and wrong bank holiday hours reliably generate the one-star reviews that are hardest to recover from.
Can you ask customers for Google reviews?
Yes, and you should ask every satisfied customer. Send the review link over WhatsApp so it is one tap. You must not incentivise positive ratings or write reviews yourself: UK consumer protection rules require reviews to be genuine.
Does a Google Business Profile replace social media?
No. It captures existing demand but cannot reach people who are not searching, cannot build preference beyond proximity and rating, and gives you no relationship with future buyers. Do the profile first, then add one social channel.
