Key takeaways

AI has made parts of social media management cheaper, such as first drafts, resizing and caption variations, but most UK SMEs still pay £950–£2,500 a month. Strategy, real content from your business, checking and replies still need people. Ask agencies how AI changes what you get for the fee.

  • Ask how AI time savings show up in your output.

Where does AI save agency time?

AI saves time on repetitive production: drafting captions from a brief, writing variations for ads, resizing graphics for each platform, transcribing video and summarising reports. Those tasks used to take a meaningful share of each month's hours.

Why have prices not collapsed?

Because the expensive parts of social media are not the parts AI does well. Understanding your customers, collecting real photos and stories, checking claims, replying to people and deciding what to change each month still take human time. Many agencies have used AI savings to produce more rather than to cut fees.

Should an agency using AI charge less?

It should deliver more value for the same fee or the same value for less. A fair test: compare what the fee buys now with a year ago, in posts, video, replies and reporting. If output is the same and quality has dropped, AI savings are not reaching you.

What are the risks of AI-heavy agencies?

Agencies that lean too heavily on AI can produce generic posts, confident errors and images that do not reflect your business. Advertising rules still apply to AI content. Ask how every post is checked and where your real material is used.

What should you ask about AI use?

Ask which tasks use AI, who checks the output, whether any of your data goes into AI tools and how, and what the time saving means for your scope. A good agency will answer openly. Data entered into third-party AI tools must still be handled lawfully.

  • Which tasks use AI?
  • Who checks each post before publishing?
  • Does your data go into AI tools?
  • How do savings change your scope?

What does this look like in practice?

Global Bridge Labs (GBL) uses AI for first drafts, variations and resizing, and people for planning, real content, checking and replies. A pattern we see is that the time saved goes into what clients value most: more video from their own footage and faster replies to enquiries.

AI questions checklist

Ask any agency these.

  • Where do you use AI in my work?
  • Who checks AI output and how?
  • What happens to my data?
  • What extra do I get from the time saved?
  • How do you keep content specific to my business?

Next step

Tell us what your current fee buys. We will tell you whether AI should be giving you more for it.

Frequently asked questions

Has AI made social media agencies cheaper?

Partly. AI has cut time on drafts, resizing and variations, but strategy, real content, checking and replies still need people, so most UK SMEs still pay £950–£2,500 a month. Many agencies use the savings to deliver more rather than to lower fees.

Should I pay less if my agency uses AI?

You should get more value for the same fee or the same value for less. Compare what your fee buys now with before, in posts, video, replies and reporting. If output and quality have not improved, ask how AI savings reach you.

Is AI-written content bad for my business?

Not if it is checked and built from your real material. AI drafts without human input tend to be generic and can contain errors. The safest approach is AI for speed and people for knowledge, judgement and checking.

Will AI replace social media agencies?

It is changing what agencies spend time on rather than replacing them for most businesses. Tasks like resizing and drafting are faster. Knowing your customers, collecting real content and talking to people remain human work.
