Key takeaways

Cost per follower on social media is your spend divided by new relevant followers. As an illustrative example, a £1,500 month that brings 150 relevant local followers costs £10 a follower. Bought followers look cheaper but bring no customers and break platform rules. Cost per enquiry matters more.

  • Cost per follower is spend divided by new relevant followers.
  • Example: £1,500 for 150 relevant followers is £10 each.
  • Buying followers breaks platform rules and brings no customers.
  • Cost per enquiry is a better measure than cost per follower.

How do you calculate cost per follower?

Divide what you spent on social media in a period, including fees, content and ads, by the number of new followers in that period. Count only relevant followers if you can, such as those in your area or industry. The result is a rough guide, not a target.

What does a worked example look like?

As an illustrative example, a local business spends £1,500 a month on management and gains 150 new followers, mostly in its area. That is £10 per follower. If 3 of those people become customers worth £500 each, the month has paid for itself, whatever the follower cost.

Why are bought followers a false saving?

Bought followers are often fake or inactive accounts. They will never buy, they lower your engagement rate, which can reduce reach for real followers, and buying them breaks platform rules. They make the account look bigger while making it work worse.

Should you pay for follower ads?

Follower or page-like ads can grow a local audience, but they are rarely the best use of a small budget. Ads aimed at enquiries or website visits usually bring more value. Use follower ads only to build a relevant audience you will then talk to regularly.

When should you stop measuring followers?

Once you can measure enquiries and sales from social media, follower cost becomes a secondary number. Track cost per enquiry and cost per customer instead. Follower growth is still a useful early signal, especially in the first few months.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see with UK small businesses: a bought follower count looks impressive, but posts reach almost nobody and enquiries are flat. Global Bridge Labs (GBL) focuses on relevant local or industry followers and reports enquiries alongside growth, so follower numbers mean something.

Follower cost checklist

Use these to judge growth.

  • Count total spend, not just ads.
  • Count relevant followers where possible.
  • Never buy followers.
  • Track enquiries alongside growth.
  • Compare cost per customer over time.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to gain a social media follower?

Divide your total social media spend in a period by new relevant followers. As an illustrative example, £1,500 for 150 relevant local followers is £10 each. The figure varies widely by sector, platform and whether growth is organic or paid.

Is it worth buying followers?

No. Bought followers are usually fake or inactive, will never become customers, can lower your engagement rate and reach, and buying them breaks platform rules. Fewer real followers in your area or industry are worth far more.

Are follower ads a good use of budget?

Sometimes, to build a relevant local audience early on. For most small businesses, ads aimed at enquiries or website visits bring more value. Use follower ads sparingly and only to reach people you will keep talking to.

What is a better measure than cost per follower?

Cost per enquiry and cost per customer. They show what social media spend actually brings the business. Follower growth is a useful early signal, but enquiries and sales are what pay the bills.
