Key takeaways

Social media attribution mistakes run both ways. Last-click reports undersell social media, because buyers often see a post, then search your name or call later. Platform reports can oversell it, because they count people who saw an ad and bought anyway. Use several views together: analytics, platform reports, enquiry logs and customer answers.

  • Last click gives social little credit for sales it started.
  • Platform reports can over-count by claiming view-through sales.
  • Customer answers fill gaps that tools miss.
  • Test by pausing or adding activity and watching enquiries.

What is attribution?

Attribution is how credit for a sale or enquiry is shared between the channels a buyer touched on the way. Last-click attribution gives all the credit to the final step. Data-driven models in Google Analytics 4 spread it across steps, based on patterns in your data.

Why does last click undersell social media?

Last click undersells social media because social is usually where buyers first notice you, not where they finish. A buyer sees an Instagram post, searches your name a week later and books through Google. Last click credits search, and social looks like it did nothing.

Why can platform reports oversell?

Platform reports can oversell because they credit sales to an ad if the buyer saw or clicked it within a set window, even if they would have bought anyway. Comparing platform conversions with your own sales records usually shows a gap.

How should a small business judge social fairly?

Use four views together: GA4 with a data-driven or position-based view, platform reports, your own enquiry log and what customers say. Where you can, run simple tests, such as pausing ads in one area or month, and watch whether enquiries change.

  • Analytics with tagged links.
  • Platform reports, read cautiously.
  • An enquiry log with sources.
  • 'How did you hear about us?' answers.

Is perfect attribution possible?

No, and chasing it wastes time. Privacy rules, cookie consent and people using several devices mean some journeys will always be invisible. Aim for a consistent, roughly right view that supports decisions.

How do you spot attribution gaps?

Spot attribution gaps by comparing three sources for the same month: GA4 conversions from social, platform-reported conversions and customers who say they found you on social. If the three differ widely, at least one view is misleading you. The gap between them is the uncertainty to plan around.

  • GA4 shows little from social.
  • Platforms claim far more than your sales.
  • Customers mention social often.
  • Branded searches rise with posting.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see: a business about to cut social media because GA4 shows few last-click conversions, while branded searches rise whenever it posts consistently. Looking at branded search, customer answers and a short pause test gives a fairer picture.

Attribution checklist

  • Do not rely on last click alone.
  • Read platform reports cautiously.
  • Keep an enquiry log with sources.
  • Ask customers how they found you.
  • Test by pausing or adding activity.

Next step

Compare last month's platform-reported conversions with your own sales records. The gap tells you how cautiously to read them.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Google Analytics give social media so little credit?

Because social often starts journeys that finish through search or direct visits, and last-click views credit the final step. Untagged links and in-app browsers also hide social visits. Use several views and ask customers.

Are Facebook ad conversion numbers accurate?

They are useful but can over-count, because Meta credits conversions within set click and view windows. Compare them with your own sales records and analytics before deciding budgets.

What attribution model should a small business use?

Google Analytics 4's data-driven model is a reasonable default, alongside your own enquiry log and customer answers. No model is perfect, so look for consistent patterns rather than exact figures.
