Key takeaways

Cold leads are people who enquired and went quiet. Many were not ready, not uninterested. Re-engage them every few months with a reason to talk now, such as new availability, a seasonal window or a relevant result, sent to people you are allowed to contact. A short personal message beats a mass promotion.

  • Contact enquiries older than 30 days that never said no.
  • Give a new reason: a date, a result, a change.
  • Reply on the same thread where they first asked.
  • Marketing to individuals generally needs consent under PECR.

What is a cold lead?

A cold lead is someone who showed interest in buying, such as messaging for a price or requesting a quote, but has not replied or bought for some time, usually more than 30 days. Unlike a cold audience, they have already been in touch, so they know who you are.

Which cold leads should you contact?

Contact leads who asked about something you still offer, who never said no, and whom you have a lawful reason to contact. Prioritise the highest-value enquiries and those with a timing reason, such as people who said "after Christmas" or "next spring".

What should a re-engagement message say?

A re-engagement message should be short, reference their original enquiry, give one new reason to talk and ask one easy question. It should not pretend nothing happened or apply pressure.

  • "Hi Sam, you asked about a garden room in March. We have survey slots next week if timing works now."
  • "We finished a similar loft in Harrogate this month; here are the photos."
  • "Is this still on your list, or shall I close it off?"

Following up the specific enquiry someone made is usually reasonable as service communication. Sending them general marketing, such as offers or newsletters, generally needs consent under PECR, unless the soft opt-in applies because they negotiated to buy a similar product and were given a chance to opt out. Remove anyone who asks you to stop.

How can retargeting help with cold leads?

Retargeting lets cold leads see your work and offer again without a direct message. People who engaged with your account in the last 90 to 180 days can be shown a case study or seasonal offer, so they come back on their own terms.

When should you leave a cold lead alone?

Leave a lead alone when they said no, asked you to stop, bought elsewhere, or have not responded to re-engagement twice. Repeated messages to people who are not interested damage your reputation, which on social media is visible to others.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see: months of old enquiries sitting in the inbox with no follow-up. Sending each a short, personal note with a new reason to talk, on the original thread, often produces new bookings in the first week at almost no cost.

Re-engagement checklist

  • List enquiries older than 30 days with no outcome.
  • Check you can lawfully contact each one.
  • Prioritise by value and timing.
  • Write a short note with one new reason.
  • Close politely after two attempts.
  • Record outcomes.

Next step

Scroll back three months in your inbox and list every enquiry that went quiet. Send the five most valuable a personal note this week.

Frequently asked questions

How do you re-engage a cold lead?

Send a short, personal message on the original thread, referring to their enquiry, giving one new reason to talk, such as availability or a relevant result, and asking one easy question. Close politely if they do not reply after a second attempt.

Can I send offers to old enquiries?

Following up their specific enquiry is usually fine. General marketing to individuals generally needs consent under PECR, unless the soft opt-in applies because they negotiated to buy a similar product and were given a chance to opt out. If unsure, ask whether they want to hear about offers.

How long after an enquiry is a lead cold?

A common working rule is 30 days without a reply or decision, though it depends on the purchase. A hair appointment goes cold in days; a building project can take months to decide. Note any timing the buyer gave you and follow up then.
