Key takeaways

Instagram DM automation sends a set message when someone comments a keyword or messages you, usually delivering a link, a guide or booking details. Used well, it turns a comment into a private conversation in seconds. It must use Meta's approved messaging tools, stay within Meta's messaging policy, and hand over to a person for any buying question.

  • Comment a keyword, get the link by DM: a short, trackable path.
  • Use Meta's own tools or an approved partner, never unofficial bots.
  • Automate delivery; let a person handle price and booking questions.
  • Meta's policy limits when and how often you can message.

What is Instagram DM automation?

Instagram DM automation is the use of Meta's messaging tools or an approved third-party platform to send automatic direct messages in response to triggers, such as a keyword in a comment, a story reply or a first message. It is commonly used to deliver links, guides and booking details without manual replies.

How does comment-to-DM work?

Comment-to-DM works by asking followers to comment a word, such as GUIDE or PRICE, on a post. An automation spots the keyword and sends a private reply with the link or information. The follower gets what they wanted quickly, and the business starts a private conversation it can continue.

What rules apply to automated messages?

Meta's Messenger Platform and Instagram Messaging API policy governs automated messages. In general, a business can reply within 24 hours of a person's last message, and may send one private reply to a comment. Outside those windows, only limited message types are allowed. Using unofficial tools that log in as you can get the account restricted.

Messages that a person has asked for, such as a guide they requested, are service messages. Sending them further marketing later needs consent under PECR.

What should you automate and what should you not?

Automate predictable delivery: sending a link, a guide, opening hours or a booking page. Do not automate judgement: answering price questions about a specific job, handling complaints or deciding whether someone is a fit. Every automated message should say how to reach a person.

  • Automate: links, guides, opening hours, booking pages.
  • Hand to a person: prices for a specific job, complaints, fit questions.
  • Always: say it is automated and how to reach someone.

Does comment-to-DM help reach as well as sales?

Comment-to-DM tends to raise comments on a post, which can help it reach more people, but the main benefit is the conversation. Do not use it on every post or for trivial rewards: followers tire of commenting to unlock things, and the comments become noise rather than buying signals.

When is DM automation a bad idea?

DM automation is a bad idea when replies need judgement, when nobody will pick up the conversation afterwards, or for sensitive services where people share personal details. In healthcare, for example, an automated reply should direct people to a secure booking route rather than invite them to describe symptoms.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see: a business posts "link in bio" and loses people on the way. Switching an offer post to comment-to-DM, with a person following up the next day, usually gives more conversations and a clear record of who asked.

DM automation checklist

  • Use Meta's tools or an approved partner.
  • Pick one keyword per post.
  • Deliver exactly what the post promised.
  • Say the message is automated and how to reach a person.
  • Have a person follow up buying questions.
  • Do not add people to marketing without consent.

Next step

Pick your next offer post and decide what a follower would comment and receive. Test it on your own account first.

Frequently asked questions

Is Instagram DM automation allowed?

Yes, through Meta's own tools or approved partners using the Instagram Messaging API, within Meta's messaging policy. Tools that log in as you or mass-message people who have not contacted you can breach Instagram's terms and get the account restricted.

How do I set up comment-to-DM on Instagram?

Use an approved automation tool connected to your professional Instagram account, choose a keyword, write the message it sends and link it to a post. Test it from another account. Make sure the message delivers what the post promised and says how to reach a person.

Can automation answer buying questions?

It can share standard information, such as opening hours or a price list, but specific buying questions need a person. Price for a particular job, availability, complaints and fit questions are where sales are won or lost, so route them to someone who can reply within the working hour.
