Key takeaways

Sponsorship activation on social media typically costs an indicative £300–£1,200 a season (4 to 12 hours) on top of the sponsorship fee, for content, tagging and a small paid boost. Without activation, most of a sponsorship's value stays on a shirt or banner. Protected event names and symbols have rules about who can use them.

  • Activation: £300–£1,200 a season, indicative.
  • Plan content with the club or event.
  • Tag partners to reach their followers.
  • Some event names and symbols are protected.

What is sponsorship activation?

Sponsorship activation is everything you do to turn a sponsorship into visibility and customers: content from matches or events, shared posts with the club or organiser, offers for their supporters and behind-the-scenes stories. It is often where the real return comes from.

What does activation cost?

Planning posts with the partner, attending or collecting content, and posting through the season takes 4 to 12 hours, about £300–£1,200. A small boost to the partner's local audience adds a media budget. Event-day filming adds £300–£600 for a half day.

  • Season content plan: £300–£1,200.
  • Event-day filming: £300–£600.
  • Supporter offer: your cost.
  • Local boost: separate budget.

What rules apply?

Some names, symbols and words linked to major events are protected by law, such as Olympic and Paralympic marks, and only official sponsors may use them. Photos of children at youth clubs need consent through the club. Check the sponsorship agreement for logo and content rights.

When is activation not worth the cost?

When the sponsored club or event has few followers or a different audience from your buyers. Then treat the sponsorship as goodwill and keep activation light.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see: a business pays for shirt sponsorship and posts once. A season plan of shared posts and a supporter offer usually turns the same fee into measurable enquiries.

Sponsorship activation checklist

  • Agree content rights in the sponsorship deal.
  • Plan a season of shared posts.
  • Offer something to supporters.
  • Respect protected event marks.
  • Track enquiries from the partner's audience.

Next step

Ask the club or organiser for their follower numbers and posting plans before renewing a sponsorship.

Frequently asked questions

How can I get value from a local sponsorship?

Plan content with the club or event, tag each other, offer something to supporters and track enquiries. Activation is often where the return comes from.

How much should I spend activating a sponsorship?

For local sponsorships, an indicative £300–£1,200 a season at agency rates is common, plus any filming or boost budget.

Can I mention a major event I am not an official sponsor of?

Be careful. Some event names and symbols are legally protected, and suggesting an official link you do not have can mislead. Check the rules first.
