Key takeaways

Social ads conversion tracking set-up typically costs an indicative £300–£1,200 in the UK (4 to 12 hours at £75–£100 an hour). It covers pixels, the Conversions API, UTM tags and key events in Google Analytics 4. Without it, ad platforms optimise blind and you cannot tell which campaigns bring customers.

  • £300–£1,200 one-off, indicative.
  • Covers pixel, Conversions API, UTMs and GA4 events.
  • Ask for a written test log at handover.
  • Cookie consent must be respected.

What does tracking set-up include?

Conversion tracking set-up is installing and testing the code and settings that record what people do after clicking an ad: enquiries, calls, bookings or purchases. It usually includes the platform pixel, a server-side Conversions API connection, consistent UTM tags and matching key events in analytics.

How much does conversion tracking set-up cost?

A simple site with one enquiry form and one platform can take 4 hours, about £300–£400. An online shop with several platforms, server-side events and phone call tracking can take 8 to 12 hours, about £600–£1,200. Developer access to the site may be needed on top.

  • One form, one platform: £300–£400.
  • Shop or several platforms: £600–£1,200.
  • Server-side or bespoke sites: developer time extra.
  • Annual check-up: 2 to 3 hours, £150–£300.

Why is tracking worth paying for?

Ad platforms learn from the conversions you report. If no conversions are reported, they optimise for clicks, which are cheap and often worthless. Correct tracking lets you see cost per enquiry by campaign and stop paying for the ads that never produce customers.

When is a full set-up overkill?

If you only boost the odd post for awareness, a full server-side set-up may cost more than it saves. Start with the pixel, UTM tags and one key event. Add the Conversions API and call tracking when spend becomes regular.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see: an account reports more purchases than the shop actually took, because the purchase event fires twice. Fixing that one event usually changes which campaigns look profitable, and the budget follows.

Tracking set-up checklist

  • List the actions that count as conversions.
  • Install the pixel and test each event.
  • Connect the Conversions API where spend is regular.
  • Tag every ad link with consistent UTMs.
  • Check cookie consent settings are respected.

Next step

Compare last month's conversions in your ad account with your actual enquiries or orders. A big gap means tracking needs fixing before more spend.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to set up the Meta pixel?

Installing and testing the Meta pixel on a simple site takes a few hours, an indicative £150–£400 at agency rates. Adding the Conversions API, several events and other platforms takes longer, typically up to £1,200 in total.

Do I need the Conversions API?

Not on day one. It helps once you spend regularly, because browser tracking misses some conversions. Start with the pixel and clean UTMs, then add server-side events when the budget justifies the extra set-up time.

Does tracking need cookie consent in the UK?

Yes. Advertising pixels use cookies or similar technology, so under PECR you need consent before setting non-essential ones. Make sure your cookie banner controls the pixel rather than letting it fire before a choice is made.
