Key takeaways

Paid social management fees in the UK are charged as a flat monthly fee, a percentage of ad spend, or a mix. For SME budgets a flat fee is clearest. As an indication, managing a small account takes 4 to 10 hours a month, or about £300–£1,000, with ad spend paid separately to the platform.

  • £300–£1,000 a month is the indicative flat fee for managing a small ad account.
  • Percentage fees are commonly 10% to 20% of spend, with a minimum.
  • Ad spend is separate and should be billed to your own ad account.
  • On small budgets a flat fee is fairer than a percentage.

What is a paid social management fee?

A paid social management fee is what an agency or freelancer charges to plan, build, monitor and report on paid campaigns on platforms such as Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn. It is separate from the media budget, which is the money paid to the platform to show the ads.

How do agencies charge for managing ads?

There are three models. A flat fee is a fixed sum each month. A percentage fee is a share of ad spend, commonly 10% to 20%. A hybrid sets a minimum flat fee with a percentage above a spend threshold. Each suits a different size of budget.

  • Flat fee: predictable, suits spends under a few thousand pounds a month.
  • Percentage of spend: scales with budget, suits larger accounts.
  • Hybrid: minimum fee plus a percentage above a threshold.
  • Set-up charge: sometimes added for account and tracking builds.

What do paid social fees cost in practice?

Fees follow the time involved. Managing one or two campaigns well takes about 4 to 10 hours a month, or roughly £300–£1,000 at the £75–£100 an hour implied by typical UK retainers. On a £500 monthly ad budget, 15% would be only £75, which is why percentage deals carry minimum fees. These are indicative figures.

Flat fee or percentage: which is fairer?

A flat fee is fairer on small budgets because the work does not shrink with the spend. A percentage is reasonable on larger budgets, where more spend means more campaigns and testing. Be aware that a percentage rewards the agency for recommending higher spend, so agree targets that guard against that.

What should the management fee include?

The fee should include campaign planning, audience set-up, ad creative or a stated creative allowance, tracking checks, regular optimisation and a monthly report on cost per enquiry or sale. Ask how often the account is reviewed. Weekly is normal for an active campaign.

  • Campaign structure and audience set-up.
  • Ad copy and creative, or a stated allowance.
  • Tracking checks and conversion set-up.
  • Weekly review and adjustments.
  • Monthly report on cost per enquiry or sale.

When is paid management not worth the fee?

It is not worth the fee when the ad budget is below about £300–£500 a month, the floor at which a local business gets results it can read. Below that, a management fee can exceed the media spend. Boost proven posts yourself and revisit once the budget grows.

What does a set-up charge for ads cover?

Some agencies charge a one-off fee to set up advertising. It should cover the ad account structure, conversion tracking, audiences, the first campaign and a naming convention. If you already have a working account with tracking, ask for the charge to be reduced, because much of that work is done.

  • Ad account and payment method in your name.
  • Conversion tracking installed and tested.
  • Core audiences and retargeting lists built.
  • First campaign and creative live.

What does this look like in practice?

Global Bridge Labs (GBL) runs Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn campaigns aimed at buyers in the client's service area, with retargeting, and reports leads and cost per lead on one page. Ad spend is paid by the client directly to the platform, so the client can see exactly what reached it.

Confirm each point in writing.

  • Fee model: flat, percentage or hybrid.
  • Any minimum fee and set-up charge.
  • Ad account, pixel and page in your name.
  • Ad spend billed directly to you by the platform.
  • Creative included or priced separately.
  • Target cost per enquiry and review dates.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage do agencies charge to manage ad spend?

Commonly 10% to 20% of monthly ad spend, usually with a minimum fee. On small budgets the minimum matters more than the percentage, because 15% of a £500 budget would not cover an hour of work. Always ask what the minimum fee is.

How much does paid social management cost for a small business?

As an indication, £300–£1,000 a month as a flat fee for one or two campaigns, based on 4 to 10 hours of work. Ad spend is on top and should be paid directly to the platform from your own ad account.

Is the management fee included in the ad budget?

No. The ad budget is paid to the platform and the management fee is paid to the agency. Ask for the two to be shown separately so you can see how much of your money reaches the platform.

Should I pay a flat fee or a percentage of ad spend?

A flat fee suits small and steady budgets because the work is similar whatever the spend. A percentage suits larger budgets with many campaigns. A hybrid with a minimum fee and a percentage above a threshold is common.
