Key takeaways

Whether to outsource your social media content calendar depends on time and ownership more than skill. Keep it in-house if someone can protect about six hours a month for planning and making plus daily replies. Outsource when nobody can, or when the calendar keeps collapsing in busy months. Either way, the business keeps the dates, the material, approval and account ownership.

  • In-house: about 5.5 hours a month plus daily replies for one platform.
  • Freelancers: about £25–£60 an hour or £400–£1,200 a month.
  • Agencies: about £950–£2,500 a month for most managed SME accounts.
  • You always keep dates, material, approval and account ownership.

What does running the calendar cost in-house?

For one platform at about 12 posts a month, roughly 90 minutes of planning and 4 hours of making, plus about 20 minutes a working day for replies. As an illustrative sum, 5.5 hours a month costs an employer about £90 at the April 2026 National Living Wage of £12.71 (about £16.27 an hour with employer costs), or about £275 as owner time valued at £50 an hour, before replies.

What can you outsource?

You can outsource any of three layers. Planning only: someone runs the monthly session and writes the plan and briefs. Planning and making: they also produce and schedule the posts. Full management: they also handle replies and reporting. Most small businesses get the most value from planning and making, keeping sensitive replies in-house.

What does outsourcing cost?

As indicative UK market ranges: freelancers charge about £25–£60 an hour or £400–£1,200 a month, agency starter packages run about £500–£950 a month, and most managed SME accounts sit at about £950–£2,500 a month. Global Bridge Labs (GBL) does not publish a rate card; we scope each piece of work to the requirement.

What must stay with the business?

Keep four things: next month's dates and offers, a supply of photos and stories from the work, approval of the month, and ownership of every account with at least two internal admins. An outsourced calendar fails fastest when the business stops supplying material and expects the provider to invent it.

When should you keep it in-house?

Keep it in-house when someone has protected time and the calendar runs above 90% completion, when your content depends on daily, specialist knowledge that is hard to pass on, or when social media is a minor channel for you. Fixing the structure of the calendar is cheaper than outsourcing a broken one.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see: an owner who runs the calendar in spare evenings, with completion rates around half. Handing planning and making to a provider while keeping approval and replies usually lifts consistency first and enquiries after. Across our client work, the first measurable result usually arrives within 3 to 4 weeks and qualified leads rise by an average of +62% a month; treat those as context, not a promise.

Outsourcing checklist

  • Count your real hours and completion rate.
  • Decide which layer to outsource.
  • Compare quotes for the same scope.
  • Keep dates, material, approval and ownership.
  • Hand over with a two-week buffer.

Next step

Write down how many hours social media took last month and your completion rate. If both are poor, outsourcing the planning and making is worth pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Should I outsource my social media content calendar?

Outsource it when nobody in the business can protect about six hours a month for planning and making, or when the calendar keeps collapsing in busy months. Keep it in-house if someone has the time and the calendar already runs reliably.

How much does it cost to outsource social media planning?

As indicative UK market ranges, freelancers charge about £25–£60 an hour or £400–£1,200 a month, and most managed agency accounts for SMEs cost about £950–£2,500 a month. Prices depend on platforms, volume and whether replies are included.

What should I still do if I outsource social media?

Supply next month's dates and offers, photos and stories from the work, approve the month by an agreed date and keep ownership of every account. Most businesses also keep replies to complaints and sensitive messages.
