Key takeaways

Community management cost in the UK is driven by hours of cover. Replying for 20 to 40 minutes each working day is about 7 to 15 hours a month, or roughly £300–£900 at indicative UK agency community rates. Evening and weekend cover costs more.

  • £300–£900 a month is the indicative cost of weekday community management.
  • That covers about 7 to 15 hours of replies a month.
  • Evening and weekend cover is usually priced as an extra.
  • Saved replies and clear escalation rules keep the hours down.

What is community management?

Community management is the day-to-day work of replying to comments, direct messages and reviews on a business's social media accounts, and passing sales enquiries and complaints to the right person. It is the part of social media that most directly turns attention into enquiries.

How much does community management cost?

Community time is charged at an indicative £40–£60 an hour by UK agencies. Twenty to forty minutes each working day comes to about 7 to 15 hours a month, or roughly £300–£900. Inside a typical retainer it is around a fifth of the hours. These are indicative figures, not a GBL price list.

  • Light cover, one check a day: around 7 hours a month.
  • Standard cover, two or three checks a day: 10 to 15 hours.
  • Extended hours or busy inboxes: priced on volume.

What changes the price?

Volume, hours of cover and complexity change the price. A local firm with ten messages a week needs little time. An e-commerce brand with hundreds of order questions needs a different service, closer to customer support, priced by volume or by the hour.

  • Message and comment volume.
  • Hours of cover: office hours, evenings, weekends.
  • Response time promised.
  • How many questions need your team's input.

Is community management included in a retainer?

It should be, within stated hours. Most retainers in the £950–£2,500 band include replies during working hours. Publishing-only packages below about £950 usually leave replies with you. Check the hours, the response time and what happens to messages at weekends.

What should stay with your own team?

Keep pricing decisions, complaints that need judgement and anything involving personal or sensitive details. A good arrangement gives the community manager saved replies for common questions and a clear rule for when to hand over. Customer data shared with a supplier needs a written data processing agreement.

When is paying for community management not worth it?

It is not worth paying for when volume is tiny and you already reply quickly yourself. If you receive a handful of messages a week and answer within a few hours, keep it. Pay for cover when replies are slow, missed, or pulling skilled staff away from paid work.

How do you measure whether it is working?

Measure speed and outcomes. Track median first response time in working hours, the share of messages answered the same day, and how many conversations became enquiries or bookings. A monthly count of those three numbers shows whether the cover you pay for is turning attention into business.

  • Median first response time.
  • Share of messages answered the same working day.
  • Conversations that became enquiries.
  • Complaints escalated and resolved.

What does this look like in practice?

Global Bridge Labs (GBL) answers comments, direct messages and reviews in the client's voice within UK business hours, and routes anything commercial to the client's team. A pattern we see is that enquiries were already arriving in messages and simply waiting too long for a reply.

Frequently asked questions

How much does community management cost in the UK?

For weekday cover, an indicative £300–£900 a month, based on 7 to 15 hours at UK agency community rates of about £40–£60 an hour. Higher message volumes, evenings and weekends cost more and are often priced separately. Ask for the fee to be tied to stated hours of cover and a response time.

Is replying to comments included in social media management?

In most retainers of £950 a month and above, yes, within stated working hours. Publishing-only packages usually exclude it. Check the hours covered and the response time, because unanswered messages are lost enquiries. Ask what happens to messages that arrive at weekends.

Can community management be outsourced safely?

Yes, with saved replies, a brand voice guide and clear rules for handing over sales enquiries and complaints. Where the supplier handles customer personal data, UK GDPR requires a written contract between you as controller and the supplier as processor.

How fast should a business reply on social media?

Within a few working hours is a sound target for most small businesses, and faster for sales enquiries. Set a response time you can keep, state the hours on your profile and make sure someone owns the inbox.
