What is social media graphic design?

Social media graphic design is the creation of visual assets for social channels: post graphics, carousels, story frames, cover images, ad creative and the templates that keep them consistent. It applies your brand colours, fonts and layout rules to each format a platform uses.

How much does social media design cost?

A template set of 6 to 12 hours costs about £150–£480 at outsourced rates of £25–£40 an hour, or about £360–£1,080 at UK agency production rates of £60–£90. A single custom graphic takes 30 to 60 minutes. These are indicative figures, not a GBL price list.

  • Template set, outsourced: indicative £150–£480.
  • Template set, UK agency: indicative £360–£1,080.
  • Single custom graphic: 30 to 60 minutes of design time.
  • Carousel of 5 to 8 slides: 2 to 3 hours.

Why do templates lower the monthly cost?

Templates move design effort to the start. Once layouts for tips, testimonials, offers and announcements exist, a new post is a matter of changing text and image. That takes minutes. Over a year, a template set repays its cost many times in saved production hours.

Is design included in a retainer?

In most retainers of £950 a month and above, yes. Design is part of content production. Publishing-only packages often expect you to supply finished graphics. Check whether templates are built in month one and whether you receive the editable files.

When is DIY design good enough?

DIY design is good enough when your content is mostly real photos and short video. A consistent font, two brand colours and a simple layout are all that is needed. Pay for design when you rely on carousels, adverts or printed-style graphics where poor layout costs credibility.

What are the risks of very cheap design?

The risks are unlicensed images and fonts, files you cannot edit, and a look shared with hundreds of other businesses. Ask where images come from and get the editable source files. By default the designer owns copyright unless your agreement assigns it to you.

What should a template set include?

A useful set covers the post types you publish most, in the sizes each platform needs. Six to ten layouts is enough for most small businesses. Ask for them in a tool your team can edit, with your fonts and colours built in, so changing text does not need a designer.

  • Tip or advice post.
  • Testimonial or review.
  • Offer or announcement.
  • Before and after, or case example.
  • Story and cover sizes for each layout.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see with UK professional services firms: a template set built in the first month means every later post looks like the firm, whoever produces it. Global Bridge Labs (GBL) includes graphics in the monthly content plan and provides a short brand playbook.

Frequently asked questions

How much does social media graphic design cost in the UK?

As an indication, outsourced design costs £25–£40 an hour and UK agency production £60–£90 an hour. A branded template set takes 6 to 12 hours, so about £150–£480 outsourced or £360–£1,080 through a UK agency. Ongoing post graphics are then priced by the hour or included in a retainer.

Are social media templates worth paying for?

Yes, if you post regularly. A template set is built once and cuts the design time on every later post from about an hour to a few minutes. It also keeps your feed consistent when different people produce content.

Can I use free design tools for business social media?

Yes. Free and low-cost tools are fine for simple graphics. Check the licence terms for images and fonts, keep to your brand colours and avoid heavily used stock templates that make your posts look like everyone else's. Keep a simple style guide so every post matches.

Do I own the graphics a designer makes for me?

Not automatically. In the UK the creator usually owns copyright unless it is assigned in writing. Ask for an assignment of finished work and the editable source files in your contract. Without that, you may only hold a licence to use the work.
