Key takeaways

Overflow social media support typically costs £750–£2,000 for a block of 10 to 20 hours at the blended £75–£100 UK agency rate, used when an in-house team is stretched. It suits busy seasons, launches and design or video backlogs. Hand over defined tasks, not judgement calls, so the agency can deliver without long briefings.

  • 10-hour block: about £750–£1,000.
  • 20-hour block: about £1,500–£2,000.
  • Best for defined tasks and backlogs.
  • Agree how unused hours are handled.

What is overflow social media support?

Overflow support is an outside team that adds capacity to your in-house marketers when work peaks. It might design graphics, edit clips, schedule posts or reply to comments, while your team keeps strategy and approvals. It is different from cover for absence, which replaces a person.

How much does overflow support cost?

Most agencies sell blocks of hours. At £75–£100 an hour, a 10-hour block is £750–£1,000 and a 20-hour block £1,500–£2,000. Design-only overflow can be cheaper at outsourced design rates of £25–£40 an hour. Check how long hours stay valid.

  • Mixed tasks: £75–£100 an hour.
  • Design-only: £25–£40 an hour outsourced.
  • Blocks of 10 or 20 hours are common.
  • Expiry of unused hours: agree in writing.

Why not just ask the team to work longer?

Regular long hours lead to mistakes, burnout and resignations. Under the Working Time Regulations, most staff cannot be required to average more than 48 hours a week. Short-term outside capacity protects the team and keeps quality up during peaks.

When is overflow support a poor fit?

When the overflow is permanent, a retainer or a hire is cheaper than repeated blocks. When tasks need deep product knowledge or fast judgement, briefing an outsider can take longer than doing it. Start with design, editing and scheduling.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see: an in-house marketer spends launch week resizing graphics instead of planning. Handing resizing and scheduling to overflow support usually frees them for the work only they can do.

Overflow support checklist

  • List defined tasks that can be handed over.
  • Share brand guidelines and templates.
  • Buy a block before the busy period starts.
  • Agree turnaround times and approvals.
  • Track if overflow becomes permanent.

Next step

Mark your two busiest months on the calendar. Book overflow hours a month before each.
