Key takeaways

Award-winning social media agencies may charge more, but awards prove that one campaign impressed one panel, not that the agency will suit your business or budget. Some awards are paid entries judged on creativity, not sales. Ask what the award was for, who was on the team and whether those people will work on your account.

  • Awards show one campaign impressed a panel.
  • Many awards judge creativity, not sales.
  • Ask whether the winning team works on your account.
  • Award claims in ads must be accurate.

What does an award prove?

A marketing award shows that a specific campaign, for a specific client, impressed a judging panel against other entries that year. It suggests capability. It does not show consistent results across clients, results for businesses like yours, or what the agency's typical team delivers.

Do award-winning agencies cost more?

Often, because they attract bigger clients and senior talent. The fee premium is worth it only if the people and skills that won the award are applied to your account. A junior team under an award-winning name gives you none of the advantage.

  • Ask what the award was for.
  • Ask who worked on the winning campaign.
  • Check those people will work on your account.
  • Compare hours and seniority, not trophies.

Are award claims regulated?

Marketing claims must be accurate and capable of substantiation under the CAP Code. An agency should be able to name the award, the year and the category. Vague claims such as award-winning with no detail are worth questioning.

When is an award not relevant?

When the award was for a big-budget brand campaign and you need steady posting for a local service, the skills are different. A firm with strong, measurable results for similar businesses is more relevant than a trophy for a different kind of work.

What does this look like in practice?

A pattern we see: a buyer picks an agency for its awards, then deals with a junior team on a small retainer. Asking to meet the day-to-day team before signing usually shows whether the award matters to your account.

Award claim checklist

  • Ask for the award name, year and category.
  • Ask what results the campaign achieved.
  • Meet the people who will run your account.
  • Ask for references from similar clients.
  • Compare on hours, seniority and results.

Next step

Ask each shortlisted agency for one result from a client like you. That matters more than any award.

Frequently asked questions

Are award-winning agencies better?

Not necessarily for your needs. Awards show one campaign impressed a panel. Results for businesses like yours and the team on your account matter more.

Do agencies pay to enter awards?

Many awards charge entry fees, and some judge creativity more than commercial results. That does not make them worthless, but it is worth knowing what was judged.

How do I check an award claim?

Ask for the award name, year, category and client, then check the awarding body's published winners list. Accurate claims should be easy to confirm.
